Hi,

I decided to join this site on complete accident. Was doing research about aspergers and the autism scale, and came across an article about the site. Well, I am happy to admit that this was one of the best accidents I have ever made. I have learned so much just from the members of this site.

So here is my/our stroy...

I am a 29yo divorced single dad of a great 5yo son. Early on in life, I suspected that "A" had some sort of motor and or mental disconnect compared to average society. The main reason I came to this conclusion, was because he has always had, what me and my ex-wife nicknamed, "the happy dance". Basically it is a obvious uncontrollable motor function involving his entire upper torso. His arms wave, he leans forward when in a standing postion, his neck stiffens, and he stands on his tip toes. The only time that I have noticed that he does not do this action, is in his sleep. However he does seem to be restless and snores loudly.

So, he started kindergarten this past august and was immediately noticed by his teacher. This was for several reasons. One was the motor function. Another thing was his ability to learn anything in one sitting, she has sense told me that she thinks he may need to start extra learning at home on different subjects than what they cover in school. We had talked about skipping grades, but she agrees as do I, that he isn't socially able. Lastly, are his social issues or lack there of. When he first started school, he had a big problem with when talking to someone being 2-3 inches from there face. we talked about the issue and it was resolved after several weeks of coaching. Other school officials told me he needed glasses, I told them to keep their opinions to themselves. (off topic) why does society feel that if someone doesn't follow "the norm" standard that everyone feels like they have the right to critique them? (sorry, had to rant for a minute)

So that brings us to me finally pushing the school system to do an ECE assesment, and testing for autism. I had originally self diagnosed "A" as being mildly autistic, but after doing more and more research, I feel he leans more towards the aspergers scale. (anyones thoughts on this diagnoses from what i have listed above are welcome) So they have agreed, and we are in the first week of the assesment and testing, which they estimate to take approximately 60-90 school days.

Well, I think thats about the best I can do for an introduction. if anyone has any questions for me, you can send me a message on here, and I will answer/respond as soon as I can.

Welcome to WP!

Thanks for sharing your story, I'd like to add no matter what your son is diagnosed with there is nothing wrong with him. My parents never told me I was diagnosed with Classical Autism at around the same age as you son until I got back in the mental healthcare circuit when I was sixteen and got rediagnosed but then with PDD-NOS - I am very glad I wasn't told at an early age or else I would have probably got hypocondriac-like behaviour and victimized by it.

Mental diagnostics (see DSM IV-TR and ICD-10) are made for getting more insight in uncommon behaviour that might cause problems for the person and it's surroundings in daily life, not to make people unfit for life. Your sons behaviour might be uncommon but there is no right or wrong in it, it just is as it is. People are different by default, THE human behaviour doesn't exist.

Undoubtably he will have his challenges, but please no matter what support him by guiding him into becoming a independent person. Highlighting his strenghts while working on his lesser ones.

Cheerfully,
Wallourdes
