Hello everyone!
I'll get right to the point because I really need some help.

I've known about asperger's for a few years now but only knew about the general symptoms (poor social skills, above average intelligence). Recently, though, i became more interested in it and began looking up all the specific symptoms and saw that many of them applied to me. A google search led me to this site and when i read the posts i can relate to nearly everything being discussed. Sometimes I felt like i was reading about myself.

When i was a little kid, i was very outgoing and talked to everyone about whatever random thought happened to pop into my head. I made friends easily and liked playing with them, but i also enjoyed spending time by myself. As i got older, i became more and more introverted and afraid of saying or doing something wrong/awkward/embarrassing. Luckily, i've kept some of the friends i made when i was more sociable.

I always feel awkward in social situations. I never know what the right thing to say and do is. I much prefer to stand back and observe people rather than participate. I'm also terrible with eye contact. I can only do it with people i've known a long time or when i force myself to so i don't seem rude.

I rock back and forth when i'm deep in thought (i think this is called stimming). I also have a lot of sound and touch sensory issues, touch being the more severe of the two). I used to think my issues with touch were part of my OCD, (which i definitely know i have), but now i'm not so sure.

I'm afraid to tell anyone about this because I'm afraid that they will dismiss it and say that there's nothing wrong, that i'm exaggerating and over-thinking it.

What do you guys think? Do i have asperger's or am i just a shy, socially awkward bookworm?

Hello

I'm also new here, and currently a bit freaked out by the possibility, even likelihood, that I have Asperger Syndrome.

I have some sympathy with your position.

So far I've found only understanding here - certainly nobody telling me I'm not as aspie. I suspect NTs, in general, might be a different matter, but I don't know. They do tend to react poorly to different. They also say the same about aspies. Both groups may be right.

As for diagnosis, the first requirement is a trip to my GP, which always worries me, as he's a fan of happy pills.

Given what I understand so far, which is, by my standards, lacking, I suspect you may have Asperger Syndrome. I suspect the label "shy, socially-awkward bookworm" - which also applies to me - may be a cover label for Asperger Syndrome. The two labels are not mutually exclusive.

hth

Niall
