Hello,

Just joined and had a poke around. Get the sense that the average age of posters
is in the teen to early thirty age bracket and am impressed by their level of
understanding of all things autistic. I'm an old gal born before Asperger had
identified his syndrome...or written about it at least. What a difference it would
have made in my life to have had the knowledge they have today.

I was 42 when diagnosed and until then had simply created acceptable
personas to suit whatever circumstances, coupled with plenty of avoidance
tactics... I guess I was different people as needed. It was a relief when
my eccentricities finally had a name. Sheer luck as it happened...I
worked alongside a Clinical Psychologist who had just read about this
'new' autism...and the more he read, the more he looked at me but it took him
a full 10 months before making his diagnosis...well it was new.

Now I am retired and family are all in distant cities and independent,
I can relax and be me for the first time in my life. I don't have to open
my door if I don't want to .. a recluse is what I was born to be it seems
as I have never been happier!
