Hello, I'm brand new here.

Please tell me if you think I have asperger's or not. I have never officially been diagnosed. When I was younger it was thought by my parents that I had ADD/ADHD. My dad and my brother definitely seem to think I have asperger's. My brother is a special ed teacher so his opinion is pretty valid. It almost seems like they want me to have it so they can somehow feel superior to me though. Maybe that's being paranoid and maybe being paranoid is one of the symptoms.

Anyway, here's some background on me. I was very reserved and somewhat anti social as a kid but not really shy. To this day it's more about over thinking things and talking myself out of things(particularly social situations)rather than being afraid for fears sake.

I'm now 41 years old. I am not married and don't have any children and in fact have never been married or ever had a serious relationship with a member of the opposite sex. I am heterosexual though. It seems that I have struggled my entire life with just about everything from school to relationships to jobs and so forth. I don't currently work either.

I am fanatical about music but don't play an instrument(not very well anyway). I never seemed to be disciplined enough but I've also never really been able to afford lessons.

What else? It took me about 9 years to finish college(to get a BA(4 year degree)). I have a tendency to over analyze things and to think about things that others don't seem to pay much attention to. I also seem to be overly sensitive(according to others). I seem to walk with my head down without realizing it(I seem to have to think about it to keep my head up). It may be because I'm sensitive to light but I'm not sure. Also, I don't take rejection very well(from either gender as either as a potential romantic pursuit or friendship).

I have had a good number of friends over the years but they have come and gone and I never seem to have to many at one time. About 95 percent of them have been male. Right now I have one fairly good female friend who I mostly just chat with online but do know here initially from an art therapy group.

Also and this might be key. I'm very detail oriented it seems. Little things often seem to bother me although I don't necessarily dwell on them for extended periods of time. For example, a few months ago I went to a concert with a friend(more like a concert and FB buddy). He gave me the ticket for a seat I was not sitting in and I asked him to give me the proper ticket. It bothered me not to have the ticket that corresponded to the seat I was sitting in. Us being in the wrong seats initially didn't help either. Other people might not think twice about the ticket thing but things like that annoy me.

I also will mention that I was severely targeted and picked on when I was younger. I was physically and verbally abused by my peers. This tapered off a bit by the time I was in high school but still continued to some extent even after that(mostly the verbal). According to my brother I don't pick up on "social cues" which apparently is one of the biggies for diagnosing aspergers. Also, some say I couldn't take a joke or tell when others are joking. I laugh at that now(pun intended).

That's about it. Like I said I have never been officially diagnosed. I have been in and out of therapy for a long time and have been off and on medications for a long time too.

Welcome to WrongPlanet

I don't know if you have it or not. It would be quite hard to diagnose someone over the internet, but if you relate to a lot of the threads in the General Discussion forum then there's a fair chance. Or someone else might come along and be of better help!

Yes, welcome aboard. You may or may not have aspergers, but you certainly note a number of things about your life that you share with other people who are diagnosed with aspergers.

My mother, my brother and my father all say I have it. They are not experts although my brother teaches special ed and works with autistic children.

My mom wants me to be on medication because of an incident that happened recently but she wants me to go back on it anyway. There are no medications for asperger's though as far as I know. Does anyone on here take stuff?

You sound just like me: looking down when you walk, pondering on useless things, etc, only I'm 27 year's younger than you. (:P) In that case, I'd say you have it, since I do.
