Hello everyone!
I'm a 39 yr old NT wife of a 37 yr old man who was just diagnosed with AS. Whew, it has been a trip getting to this point. We have only been married 3 1/2 yrs (a second marriage for me - I have a 13 yr old daughter). We are currently living separately, but both working hard to find the common ground to be able to come together again. We are fortunate to have found a fantastic cognitive therapist who has been helping a lot. There is hope! The diagnosis of AS was a blessing to all of us. Before the diagnosis I would have sound just like the other angry, frustrated NT spouses who blame everything on the other person. But I get it now.
Our situation is a bit different. We came together last year with my aging parents who are raising my deceased sister's 3 children. By came together, I mean, we moved into a big house together (everyone has their own space - for the most part for me it has been ideal because I am no longer needing to be in two different locations taking care of two different households). My husband was all for this and very supportive and he still is... but I have known since shortly after we were married that "something" was off/wrong because of the way he isolated himself - and I have felt that I couldn't reach him. Now in this living situation, he has really alienated himself from everyone in the household and I am at a loss. He is insistant on the fact that he can move back into the situation with new skills he is working on and make everything better. I am very concerned to take that step. Part of me thinks it would be better for all (including him) if maybe we got an inexpensive condo nearby that could be "our" space outside of this living situation. Of course, that presents cost problems. I guess we're just trying to sort through it all and make the best decisions for all involved. That's my story in a nutshell. ( :
