35-year-old woman. Have suspected for years that I am on the autism spectrum, but haven't been diagnosed. Have received treatment for anxiety and depression, and diagnosed with ADHD (mostly inattentive) and Bipolar Disorder NOS (not otherwise specified) because I have frequent mood swings but don't fully meet the criteria. 5-year-old nephew recently diagnosed with "High-Functioning" Autism. The doctor says the diagnosis will probably change to Asperger's when he is older. My nephew and I are a lot alike and my family recognizes the symptoms in me. I feel a kindred spirit with him . . . that I "get him" when others don't.
Not sure where to go from here. I am thinking about getting professionally evaluated. Maybe it would help explain some things -- and help me to make sense of myself and my life. Also, I wonder if there is help for adults who need to learn communication and relationship skills. I'm in a serious relationship and hoping this will be the one, but I am in my mid-thirties and never-married. Maybe there is a common theme as to why my relationships have not worked out, and I am just blind to it.
