Hi

My names Tom, I'm 30 and live in the UK . I have just been diagnosed as a high functioning autistic? I have suspected i had aspergers for a few years now and finally plucked up the courage to see a psychologist. I thought I would feel better knowing but truth is, I'm really not cool with it at all.
To make things worse I think my son might be autistic too and I just keep thinking about my past experiences as a child. I really don't want want that for him. Is it possible that the way I am could have an impact on his social development skills?

Hi Tom. Welcome to WP. Our children learn from us, but if he is autistic most probably he is not copying his social pattern from you. I am NT and my daughter has AS. I am very friendly. When my daughter was little I used to tske her to the park everyday. I had friebds there, but my kid was not able to play with other kids. I started playing with her in the park and involving other kids in the games so she could make friends, but as soon as I walked out she lost interest. It was very hard and required a lot of time and efford, but she eventually started making friends by herself. And it is still difficult for her. So do not blame yourself. But it would be good to get help for him so he does not suffer as much as you did. I would recommend behavior modification therapy. My daughter has been on therapy for three years now. It's made wonders for her!

Hi guys and thanks,

Its not that he hast got any friends, the other children really like him. He just tends to want to do things alone. I was at his sports day at school a few days ago. He was sitting with the other children but it was like he was in his own bubble. The other children seemed to be together (?). While he was kind of doing his own thing. Its hard for me to explain because I have trouble understanding these situations. It just takes me back...

I don't want him growing up to be angry either. I was, and still am angry. I go crazy in public sometimes at the slightest knock-back by another. I've really just had it with being treated different I think. This behaviour is what I'm most worried about because I've always found the slightest confrontational situation hard, I really cant tell whether someone just wants to debate or hit me. So I just go mad! Its what's ALWAYS held me back in life. Can i/therapy teach him to recognise body language so he doesn't have these problems?

You dont have to explain that much. We all know what you are talking about. If he has AS that is normal. Yes, a good therapist will help him with intwraction problems and also to recognize and understand social cues.
