Looking to learn more about autism specturm
What is your first name? Sonya
Age: 33
Location: Kansas City
Hobbies and Interests: Hiking, kickboxing, illustration/graphic design, playing music/singing
Why are you here? Mom has (unofficially) diagnosed aspergers, thinking I may be on the spectrum, but not sure
When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder):
Favorite subjects: science, history
Year/Grade: While sometimes it feels like I'm still at some grade level or another, I received my Bachelors in Studio Art/Graphic Design
Favorite music: Folk, country, classical, various forms of rock, pop, rap, etc although I'm supremely picky about individual artists within each genre.
Books: Non-Fiction - esp cultural history, these days, but also myth and folktales, and used to read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi.
TV shows/Movies: Various HBO series, Hayao Miyazaki films, anything Roger Corman was ever involved in
Instrument: Piano, Guitar, Recorder (classical and Irish music), saxophone
Do you like sports? I never did like "sports" because of the competitive nature of team sports. I have found as an adult that I really enjoy more individual sports that require a constant high level of concentration - not that I'm all that good at them. Taking kickboxing and traditional boxing classes has kind of opened up a whole new perspective for me on coordination and what "sports" are all about.
Family: I have several
Clothing: Whatever seems to fit the day
How did you find this website? Ye olde google search
Job: Freelance graphic designer, web programmer, illustrator and occasional musican
Plans for the future? "To travel to the ends of the earth and judge them" (as James Branch Cabell would say)
Any comments? Just hoping to find some answers to some questions about being raised by someone with Aspergers and the nature vs. nurture consequences that might have. If I have some symptoms of aspergers, could it be because of genetics or is it also possible that I have some kind of environmental conditioning? Also, if another parent is not NT in a different way... say... manic depressive... is it entirely possible to have a NT child with one parent on the Autism spectrum and another with severe manic depressive disorder? I fear not, but since I don't seem to have as many problems as my parents, is it just environmental conditioning? Or maybe I have some entirely different problem.
Welcome
(the other guy said it, so I thought I might too.) (on a side note, I'm always a bit paranoid about making jokes on this website cos people might think I'm special or maybe they will take it seriously instead... Either way, this was a joke and I don't normally explain everything I say or do, this paragraph just got away from me and I spent to long writing it to delete it.
This one paragraph should explain majority of my psychological process. ![]()

Welcome! I love music too - used to play oboe professionally, and have enjoyed learning recorder as well. Classical and Celtic music are my favorites too!
That must have been hard growing up with two non-NT parents. I have bipolar and am in the process of getting diagnosed for AS, and I've chosen not to have children, because I've always felt that's a challenge beyond my own capablities. My mom was severely depressed when I was a kid, and I know how it feels to have to grow up too soon because your parents aren't able to really be there for you :/
Anyway, nice to meet you! ![]()
