Myself, I have a lot of characteristics of AS although I was never professionally diagnose. However, I had a lot of tests when I was younger and when I go over the results, having AS would explain heck of a lot. I guess back in the late 1960's and early 1970's AS wasn't known as much. I do have a sharp mind for science, history, electronics, amateur radio, Chevy Blazers, cats and so on. I work in auto parts. Being born in 1966, I see myself more of a member of "Generation Jones" (google it) where I share a lot in common with late Baby Boomers and Early X'ers. I'm a bit of a hardcore paleo-libertarian/conservative politically. I think over time I've learned to cope with the shortcomings although a love life still eludes me although my current economic situation also plays into that. Still, I consider AS a gift, I had my IQ tested and got 132 as a result.
