Hi Tor! Welcome to Wrong Planet! You are among friends here at WP! I am in my early 50s, and am self diagnosed for the past few years, but I meet the criteria for Asperger's, so there is no doubt. I follow the Rule of Duck. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck, so I am an Aspie duck. I don't need to go for an official diagnosis, as I am not in need of any government sponsored or insurance paid programs. I also don't care for psych docs and therapists, as I was taken to a lot of them when I was a child and teen and hated it. I know they do help some people, but therapy doesn't help me, as I don't like getting personal with people. I also hated the side effects of the drugs they put me on as a kid, and the drugs didn't even help, so I am not interested in taking any psych meds. I did go for therapy for several months a few years ago for depression, but that was basically so I could qualify for Medicaid. Once I had Medicaid I was able to get my other health problems taken care of, and then was able to qualify for Disability based on my other health problems.
Each person needs to determine for themselves whether or not to try therapy. If you do go for it, sometimes a doc/therapist will be a good match for you and sometimes not, so you may have to try several to find the right one.
Just remember, when you have questions about spectrum disorders, there is usually someone at WP who can help, or at least who can point you towards some other source of help.
