Hi, my username is Zita.

I have a brother, now dead, who was diagnosed aged ten with Autism.

I was diagnosed with Social Anziety disorder.

Last night I was reading about a condition called Avoidant Personality Disorder, and it seems to fit all I have myself.

So what I would like to know is, how would you know if you had Aspergers or Social Anxiety or Avoidant Personality, if anyone knows?

Where I live, it is hard to get a correct diagnosis or pretty much any help at all.

Hi Zita. I actually have both. Asperger's is a series or combinations of symptoms (stimming, hyper/hyposensitivity to stimuli, repetitive behaviour, resistance to change, social awkwardness, extreme interest in one or more particular subject to the detriment of others, etc). AvPD are folks who avoid social interactions at all costs and often see themselves as not being worthy. Believe me. Part of me want to go to those Asperger's Meetup groups here in town, and some people with Asperger's do attend, but my AvPD is so intense that I just stay home to myself. Really, I'm not that far away from being like a Japanese Hikikkimori person.

Hi RedRobin.

The problem is that I have developed a NEW "phobia"..Forums!

I used to love forums, I found it was a way to be myself and to speak my mind, a place where people liked and accepted me..but then I ran into problems. And NOW I feel self concious even on a forum..

I spend all my day alone.

A part of me though doesn't want to be alone.

Obsessions - Yes! That's me..taking up all my thoughts..yep.

I have so much to say,

But don't know..

Hi TheWebbz.

I find it confusing...I mean, there must be some simple questions which differentiate the difference between Social Anxiety, Aspergers, and Avoidant personality...

It's also a matter of searching ourselves to see exactly what is going on.

I know for me, if I am honest...

My symptoms would be:

-Fine until aged 13.
-ongoing (27 years apx)
-breaks, kindof, in between, but in total, no more than a year of two of socialising in a small group, and still feeling anxiety etc.
-apart from that, isolation: prefer to be on my own, apart from close family.
-anxiety even around close family.
-anxiety is: feeling tense; on edge; and nervous.
-feel ok to go out for walks WHICH ARE routine (take the kids to school, lunch out with a trusted relative) but nothing other than that.
-I feel ok with myself, I like myself. I also like other people the same way. I either like a person or I don't like a person.
-when I don't like a person, it irritates me.
-oversensitive to negative judgment - even if wrongly perceived (example if someone ignores me, perhaps because they didn't see me). I worry about it.
-this anxiety and over self concoiusness stops me getting a job or a career.

If I could just relax around people and be myself - I mean as myself as I would be on my own, all would be fine. Also if I wasn't so sensitive.

If it is social anxiety disorder as I was diagnosed, how come it hasn't gotten better? How come I see a lot of others with Social Anxiety Disorder going out and doing things (I mean from what I've read on forums).

It is odd that my sibling had Autism. And now here I am, living a life of isolation, as I have done for a long time.

I have not seeked any real help for it.
Just got used to it.

I started those symptoms at age 13 as well.

And I was thought to have SAD for years before it was apparent that I was an Aspie.

My mom has SAD but she does do social things. She has to.

Also, once an older sibling is an Autie or Aspie, it's more likely a younger sibling will have an ASD as well. Like my 4 year old brother.

Perhaps you are an Aspie instead.

The best and only way to know is to see a professional. Diagnostics are your strongest tool in finding treatment, solutions and therapy for any conditions that you might have.
