Well, I've never been diagnosed with AS or any other psych condition (where I grew up in the 50s there were no psychologists) but since i was 5 yrs old some form of autism has always been evident. From the first morning I showed up for school, before the doors of the school even opened, I felt sure that i was on the wrong planet.

Despite that, i've worked 35 + yrs as an insurance adjuster/accident investigator and, at approx 10 yr intervals, i've made 2-3 yr forays into the social or NT world, withdrawing in despair or disgust at the end of each one.

Throughout my life i've also been a writer - with approx 20 unpublished short stories & a self-published novel which i won't name here because I don't want to be accused of advertising.

My discovery of Wrong Planet was an unexpected surprise - shy/autistic people communicating with each other in a group - that's historic - but this discovery came during my most recent withdrawal from humanity, so at first I planned to remain a spectator.

But the topics you've been debating here are too interesting & i have too much to say about them, so it's time that I started contributing.

Welcome to WP. I hope it provides you a more interesting and fulfilling environment for discussions than "humanity". It certainly does for me.

I'd be interested to hear your opinions on topics such as "AS: Neurological Condition or Mental Illness?" (under General Autism Discussion)

"What was wonderful...about developing friends through this internet support group was that it was in writing! I could see and re-read their words. I could respond or not respond as I was ready. Things didn't move at the rapid pace that overwhelmed me in real-time. Most importantly, these people understood me. They experienced life in much the same way I did. I was valued for the inner me that I shared with them. I didn't need to play the social games the world seemed to expect of me. I went to visit my new friends. I began the process of un-learning the self-defeating strategies I had learned in order to survive in a world I failed to understand."

Thanks for the welcomes - it does feel like a 'home away from home' here.
