Good Evening, my name is Michele and I live in the Tampa bay area. My son is 2 years and 3 months and still has not formed any language, about 6-8 months ago I was successful in teaching him signs but he stopped doing them about 3 months ago. He had surgery July 1st.. ear tubes and an adenoidectomy. There is a possibility of a hearing component being the cause to his lack of development but I have been told by the specialists that typically there is some speech development that just isn't correct or as much as other children, he just has none at all. I now have a referral to a developmental specialist, audiology and ENT... my son has been seeing a speech pathologist for a year now. I am confused and afraid of what this all will mean for my son. I am afraid of someone misdiagnosing him, of me jumping the gun, or me not doing enough. He has had his peculiarities that I just always dismissed. He never held a bottle, he walks backwards sometimes, he will lick all over his face for no reason, he wasn't able to latch as an infant and had to be bottle fed however he was always so advanced, so smart. He rolled over at 2 months, crawled at 5 months and walked at 7 months. He can do 3 year old puzzles, follow instructions after visually given, attentive to stories, looks you in the eye (but I would say 50/50), is extremely affectionate and most importantly SHARES the moments with you. If he is enjoying something he looks to me so that I can enjoy it with him. I just don't know and feel so lost right now. I am hoping that parents that have been through what I am going through will be able to give me some insight on what is normal, what's not normal and what to expect while I go through this process. I need advice from those that have been through this and are going through this, this is new to me and new to my family. Nobody knows what to say, and some think that the doctors are over reacting. I know that when I compare my son to other children I can see a small difference, he is just different. We went to the library this last week for story time and to see the fire truck. He became so quiet, unsure and almost in his own world while we were there. It was like the stimulation was too much for him. Thanks for reading I will stop rambling now.
