Hello, my name is Chloe, I'm 17 and was diagnosed with AS a few months ago.

Living the first part of my life with myself and my family just assuming I was shy and reserved was quite hard.
I always knew I was different in some way. Not majorly, but I realised that I thought differently from other people.
The biggest problems I face are with being able to talk to people and make friends.
The reason I actually got diagnosed was a result of visiting a psychiatrist because of depression, because I was so lonely.
I have a lot of trouble with non-verbal forms of communication, keeping up a conversation, and saying/doing inappropriate things.
I basically have almost every characteristic incorporated into my behaviour in some way.

But some good things...I love music, I have to know everything possible about the bands I like, or at least know more than the people around me.
I have been accepted to study chemistry at the university of aberdeen (Scotland) and I start an honours degree course in September.

Welcome to WrongPlanet.

My 7 year old son just got diagnosed with Asperger's a few months ago.

We were lucky his grade 1 teacher has a son with Asperger's - so she picked it up.

Is it a relief to get diagnosed?

I think UbbyUbbyUbby(WP nickname)/Daniel found it a relief. He has been asking for a while why he's so different to other kids. He is now happy to know why.

He also thinks he's famous because of all the replies he gets on this forum.

There are lots of great books about Asperger's out there - perhaps you could visit the local library. If you go to Tony Attwood's website http://www.tonyattwood.com.au you will find lots of good information. He also has a list of recommended reading.

Also, WrongPlanet is a great resource.

Thank you everyone.
I don't have anyone around me who understands what AS is like. My parents still think I'm just shy, but I guess they will always be that way, since I was diagnosed so late, I will always be just their little girl, and this is just the way I am.

It was a relief to be diagnosed. I felt like such a hypochondriac before!
Some people say that since it can't be cured there's no point in a diagnosis, but now that they know what it is, they know the kind of things I'm going through and have some idea of how to help me.

I'm really in to old school stuff, almost anything of rock, metal, hair metal, glam, or punk rock.
I listen to anything from David Bowie to Metallica.

Welcome! You sound a lot like Sophie in many ways(known as Starbuline on WP)! (except for that chemistry part)
