Hello.
My name is Dave, I am 28 years old. I have two children, my son has AS and my daughter is too young to tell although I'm not picking up any vibes! I've been with my wife for just over 10 years.
I have worked as a Teaching Assistant for 8 years and I am currently looking into ways of becoming a Primary School Teacher.
I find being around children sooo much easier than other adults... They don't judge me and I can relax and let all my quirkiness loose for few hours a day before I have to turn back into an adult again. Turns out that children love that sort of thing so its a win for everyone!
My son started showing signs when he was 2 years old, he is now 5 and we are pushing for a formal diagnosis so he can better understand himself (and more importantly so others can understand him!)... As I have been in and out of depression since my late teens trying to understand why I don't fit in this world.
The final straw for me and getting my own diagnosis (ongoing. entering final stage now) was when we took our son to the paediatric OT and she was more interested in getting to know my quirks than his, coming to the conclusion that we both have AS and its very likely I passed it on to him. My family and me have known I was on the spectrum for most of my life, but because of "pride" they wouldn't admit to having a defective son (their perspective not mine) wouldn't get me the help and support I needed.
I am a better parent than that, so here we are. In the process of getting both a diagnosis for my son and myself, although in my case not a whole lot would change in how I deal with the world... But it sure would help the people who know me understand some of my mannerisms.
That's long enough I think. Thank you for reading and for having me on your forum.
