Hello to everyone reading;
I'm Em, a 23 y/o autistic/aspie woman (I don't have a preference between the 2 diagnostic terms). I was unofficially diagnosed (long-ish story) when I first was able to get therapy at the age of 20 and have since been officially diagnosed by my current therapist who has a lot of experience with spectrum adults. I was also technically diagnosed (it was suggested) when I went to psychiatry at a very young age (4 or 5) but I guess it wasn't a pressing issue at the time (I have no hard feelings about this, just to be clear). Anyhow! I'm very slow to initiate any kind of social contact and avoided forums like this for a long time even though I wanted to join. After going through a lot of discussions and threads over the past day I realized I really should just join and I'm excited to engage in discussion with everyone. It's really refreshing to feel more understood or have more common ground with people and I'm glad that there's spaces on the internet like this.
My 'special interests' are primarily knitting and sewing; I love making clothes and it's my longterm goal to have a primarily handmade wardrobe. I tend to otherwise have more nerd-adjacent interests, I love sci-fi/horror (particular as a combined genre) and Alien is my favorite movie of all time; I also like Star Trek (please don't quiz me haha I'm not quite a super-fan). I tend to like more cartoon-y superhero content (not all of it, I'm very limited in what I get very attached to) and I love Batman the Animated Series as well as Teen Titans. I also like quite a bit of anime. Anyone with shared interests, I'd love to talk about them! Or anything else you're interested in, I think it's awesome when anyone has particular passions/special interests.
I think that's all the personal things I needed to get out! I have a lot of questions so I'll probably be posting in different threads, just because it will be nice to finally discuss issues I have with people who can more or less relate.
Thanks! Have a lovely day :heart:

Hi and a very warm welcome to you :). We seem to share alot of the same interests. I love sewing and knitting, make my own clothes(have a sewing room), love sewing pretty much anything and everything(clothing-wise), as well as mohair bears, traditional and modern quilts, embroidery, toys, you name it. My mother was the inspiration to learn, as she passed away when I was five, so my memories of her sewing were very strong, and it was clearly in the genes! So good to have you with us!

Thank you for the welcome! That's incredible that you have such a wide range of sewing experience! I mostly make bags for my knitting and basic clothing for now, but quilting is in my eventual future (I have squares cut out, just having difficulty motivating myself to assemble them). I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your mother, but that's wonderful that she passed along such an amazing gift. I am self-taught for both sewing and knitting, knitting began when I was 17/18 and sewing only began recently when I was 22, but I love them both! I didn't expect them to turn into such obsessions, that's for sure.
