Hi, my name is Keri, I'm 31, married and have 3 children. I had never heard of there being a milder or higher functioning form of autism until about 2 months ago while listening to an audiobook at work. The father of the main character had it and I identified with this character. I have always felt like something was wrong with my communication all my life. If only I had a penny for everytime I heard someone say "do you talk?" lol. It seems to be worse when I'm very depressed which I am now. I had a cervical fusion surgery done last May and that has contributed to the chaos that has become my life. My mom has basicly had to take over everything this past year not only because of the surgery but because of how much I have withdrawn from reality. I was out from work on short term disability for about 6 months but went back to work in December. I'm so depressed and I'm always on the verge of quitting my job which I know I can't do. My husband has a decent job but we need the duo insurance and the extra money but I just can't seem to fuction. My husband just doesn't understand that this job takes sooooo much out of me that all I can do when I get home is crawl into bed or watch tv or mostly sit here at the computer. He mistakes my withrawl from our family for me cheating on him at work. I try to explain to him that I can barely take care of myself much less have this whole other life he thinks I have. I find it extremly difficult just to go to the doctor. I wouldn't even know where to start to find help for this. I feel like I have very little support, my mom can't do it all!! ! The people I thought were my friends at work whisper about how weird I am because they say I make them feel weird and don't know how to talk to me anymore. Are there any other moms out there that can relate even just a little?

well, first things first. If you've read the descriptions of AS, maybe dropped by and taken a few of the tests, it's probably an indication of where you might fall in the spectrum. It's not always cut and dried.

I'm hardly an expert, but is it possible that cervical fusion may have altered your hormonal balance? I'm not sure what the procedure actually is, but only a doctor could explain it better (a lot better than I..;) that can be a source of depression (the missus is pre-menopausal, and does get down and out sometimes...)

welcome to the family...

Welcome HeLLoKiTty,

I'm sure my wife could relate - and she's not even aspie.

You've got a right to be tired with 3 kids and a job.

Of course, you do have to see to your marriage too. Could you get the kids minded and take a weekend away with hubby. Somewhere quiet where you could just talk?

I agree with pakled. Whether or not you have AS, it's not necissarily the cause of your depression. Have you considered seeking couseling for it? Money is always an issue, but often times insurance will cover it.

One suggestion I have for the husband issue, could you email him with him while at work? I'm thinking that maybe you could talk some with him before the pressures of the day brings you down. You also mention that you just sit at the computer, so the same may help at the house if you have two computers, since it can be emotionally easier to type than speak face-to-face. Also remember to show you're happy to see him at the end of the day. A hug and a smile can go a long way (course the same applies to him).

Aye-yi-yi! Such pain and depression, my goodness. I got to do that when my kidneys failed, and I am so glad to be on the other side of that. I need to take two antidepressents to be normal, but when your body stops making serotonin that's what you need to do.
As for your husband's suspicions, gee, what's wrong with him? I know it's no fun to have a depressed wife, but I don't know why he would rather interpret your depression as unfaithfulness. Why would that be less threatening than acknowledging your depression? Because then it's his fault and he would need to fix it? I haven't a clue.
I hope this site helps you get through your tough spot. Welcome.
