Hello, denizens of the interwebs.

My name is September Max.
I just turned 20 and got diagnosed with AS back in 1991.
However, my mother decided not to tell me about this (or inform the school board in our small midwestern town so that I would never be put into "special" classes) and, instead, just guided me through the process of learning to work within the constructs of the NT world.
In late 2006, she finally told me and all of the strange little pieces in my life (hyperlexia, the occasional panic-attack but not quite over sensory stimuli, a terror of the telephone and many others) fit together beautifully.
Many of my friends, coworkers and peers tell me that "oh, you're not autistic because you're not like on Rain Man" - but I usually shudder at that and explain that we're all on a large spectrum. And on my end of the spectrum, it's a strange and exciting place.
I'm an anthropology and chemistry major at a small liberal arts college in Florida. I find this to be an ideal field because it allows me to analyse and better understand the planet I exist on and realise how and why things occur and what functions the society has, all of that difficult stuff to understand. It also lets me find a way to explain why I ask so many questions about social interactions and gives me a fine excuse to be socially awkward.
I do improvisational comedy, assistant manage a Starbucks and perform slam poetry.
And I'm not going to allow the NT world to relegate me to some category of "oh, you have AS, you must be [insert stereotype here]".

Hello. :D

Hi September Max,

welcome to WP.

I find it interesting that parents name their children days of the week...or months of the year etc. Was September a significant month to your parents or did they just like the name? Please tell me if i'm poking around where not wanted.

Wow, anthropology...I don't know much about that, but it's got something to do with studying bones, right? Sorry, all I know about it is from what I see on tv lol.

Yep...a lot of people when they hear "autistic" think of Rainman. A lot of people still don't understand how you can be autistic and verbal. People need to be educated more! When I told a so called "friend" that I was autistic she said..."so your ret*d?". Shows how much people know...very minimal.

Anyway...I hope you enjoy posting here.
