Ah yes, I can see dial-up would be very slow? Any reason not to get broadband instead?

Broadband's more useful to pay for than cable TV. With cable, you'd get bored even with those channels, whereas broadband you can go to so many websites, get the pictures and Youtube videos come up quickly....

Contrary to what many people seem to believe, most days in the life of a moderator are pretty slow and boring, which is just the way we like it. It means we're doing our jobs well.

You get dial up for free?

Yes, but only 'til Aug. 31st. Governor Christ cut property taxes and the University is suffering a 10% budget cut. Some counties and municipalities are threatening litigation.

Ah, through the school. I see.

The cheapest way that I can see
is to pool with neighbors, and do
a wireless router, but that's a lot
more difficult in sparsely populated
regions, which I think is the case
for you.

I'm surprised you don't get free broadband. They have it here in the UK. It was a bit over hyped thing when they started. The providers have been voted the worst service, even though they are the biggest companies.

A few (very few) cities have set up wireless
for free. But, the US is less willing to provide
useful things to it's citizens for free.

But it is not as if it was municipal, these are companies that get their money elseware.
