The sudden-ness of his departure is rather concerning actually. He was making plans for the LGBT forum with BrendaEM only earlier today!

No need to worry. TallyMan is fine.

I'm in two minds over the matter at the moment to be honest. It takes up a lot of time and is a lot of aggravation. :chin:

LOL League_Girl, I can't mess up with people signatures. I can ask them to make a change and warn or ban them if they refuse and the sig contains spam or offensive stuff.

Oh why not? Mods do it on other forums and it's been done to mine here, twice. I guess things have changed here.

Because mods on WP are only allowed to use a limited set of tools. We have no access to edit members signatures, remove offensive avatars or remove spammers profiles or various other things that mods can normally do on sites. We work with one arm tied behind our backs.

Things must have been different at one stage as I remember Sinsboldy removing an avatar of mine once. Why did Alex take these tools away?

It is not that tools were taken away, but that mods do not get them all at once.

What kind of aggravation?

I would have thought that the position of mod is one that you get the ultimate last laugh.
Don't agree with a member or they find fault with you individually or collectively as a moderation team (or your way of getting things done) and BAM "You are banned".
I would imagine that kind of power would be very highly valued. Certainly worth any sundry aggravation.
That is unless you have never done the above before, then I guess it would suck.
So I guess that is two questions.
What aggravation? And have you banned someone for the above?

Sometimes things are as simple as BAM "You are banned". However, things are rarely so simple. Nobody who desires the "power" of being a moderator is ever picked. They would be likely to abuse such power for petty purposes or to impose their opinions over those of other members. WP is first and foremost a support site. When someone crosses the line a moderator first needs to ask why? Is the member a nasty troll who only want to stir trouble or is the member going through major trauma in their lives and just having a vent, have other members been baiting them here on WP or on other sites? Some members have appalling social skills and make innocent mistakes in their interactions with other members, sometimes resulting in a flame war. Some of the members here despise each other, moderators need to try to keep the peace. Some vulnerable members are at risk of self-harm depending on how we deal with them. There is a lot to consider when moderating. So no, it isn't usually a case of BAM "You are banned".

So you make the best call you can and hope that it is the right one? Sounds fair.
I think though that in a place like this where most of us have a problem conforming offline with our greater community for a variety of reasons, a person will be likely to have more than a suspicion of anyone in a position of moderator.
That I would suspect would by and in itself make a moderation a delicate duty. Am I right?
I sure would not be one.
You misread someone's intent or view the world differently or have a clash of personalities and then have to remain neutral? Objective? Tolerant?
I can understand why you would want to go.
I was just trying to gauge if my reasons are yours.

Sometimes thunder, but only where/when velvet would definitely not get the job done.

Sinsboldly held what are known as admin tools, and she had to beg long and hard to get them, and was only given them because at the time Alex (who has complete access to everything) was inactive due to school obligations. It is not standard at WP to give moderators admin tools and never has been been; too much room to mess up other areas of the code. I don't know if it will be possible after the switch over to give moderators a larger slice of what currently falls under admin tools or not; it would be nice for them if that could be done.

It makes it much harder that so many members do think it's a happy little job where moderators enjoy wielding their power. They have no respect for the level of dedication and how much personal sacrifice ends up involved, and that lack of understanding colors interactions quite negatively at times.
