Because, in my view, as expressed in many places,
mods have to be able to be criticized to a degree greater
than we could allow to normal members. Now, not only
were you subjected to a very high level of such attack
(some of which was even over the line for me - but
linked to the issues of your moderating style), but you
were also unable to cope with those attacks. Hey, I wasn't
subjected to that level (though close), so I don't know how
I would have reacted.

A moderator, in my opinion, and this is just my opinion, on any board, should be seen to be human. Human beings do react to things, human beings do have feelings...well most do, anyway. I never saw the logic in having moderators who were to set some sort of example and appear to be perfection. I find it silly that people always have to have this sort of example to look up to, reminding them of their own imperfections. I am well aware that my view on that differs to the view of others. For me, a more human mod was always more approachable. I would never approach and do not bother to approach mods who seem too controlled and perfect to be true.

Grael, I think you are a beautiful person.
I just don't think that you had the toughness
to handle the constant harassment the position
entails. Maybe my resignation is because of something
similar. It drained me - having to fight so damned hard
for what I thought was clear, and what I believed worked
best here. I just hope that it doesn't fall apart again.

I think what bothers me most, is that knowing that I had those issues of sensitivity, a certain few still saw fit to lay into me at many opportunities. I believe I am correct to maintain my cynical view of human beings, aspie or otherwise. My experiences here proved that so. I am glad I am not a mod.
I resent the reason given me by another 'mod' for not being a mod any longer.
But I always maintained, it really meant little to me in terms of a position.
Safer to view the net as something beyond real life...and its members as nothing more than names and typing on a computer screen, maybe.

Why are your problems worse then everyone else's? To you they are the most important things in the world, but other people have their own problems which I daresay may be worse then yours.

We all have feelings. Some are just more
easily effected by different things. There are
roles which people are not suitable for. A lot of
them, for me.

Perfection no. But getting sullied in a drag out
flame war with the membership is just a recipe
for disaster.

But disassociating oneself from being
overly hurt by what someone says on
the net is not that difficult. Sure as hell
not some sign of 'perfection'.

I don't think that I know such reasons. I'm just
telling you what my opinion was, here in public,
since you seemed to ask. I know that you are already
aware of what my view is.

You don't? Except for a few whom I have trusted
to be real, that's EXACTLY what I do. People take
on personas on the net.

I may be too sensitive and insecure to be a mod, but that is me.
And I would rather be too sensitive than be insensitive.
Those who are meant to be a part of my life will value me for my sensitivity, I suppose.
And those who are not worth my time will do all they can to cause me hurt...and I have learnt from a friend that it is those who I need to tell to, in a turn of phrase, 'f off'.

I agree with ShadesofMe we didn't have these problems when members moderated themselves. We only need moderators to clean-up major spam attacks and leave it to Alex to decide who should or should not be banned.

For the most part, I've agreed. Except to put out
the occasional flame war, and remove obscene
material. Cutting a thread to shreds
seemed adequate for that. Allowing the mods to ban
spammers though made a world of difference - for the
good. Otherwise, we were getting swamped with overwork
trying to keep up with automated bots.

But, if Mr. Mark was indeed receiving copious amounts of
complaints from members seeking a stricter place, who am
I to say? I DO know that there are members who would like
much more strict enforcement of the rules here. And my stance
was likely to make me an unreasonable choice for sending such
complaints to.

In the end though, that's a decision which Alex has to make. Complaints
to other mods is less likely to effect what I would consider a mistake
than directly to him.

This isn't aimed at any mod in particular, but I feel that if one mod is getting to emotionally involved in an issue, instead of acting in haste on that issue, they should ask a more impartial mod to make the decision on whether action is warranted.

I find this is a good rule for life, too. Rarely is a situation as bad as it seems when you're overwhelmed and upset. Stepping back and making a decision when you're calmer, or asking an impartial third party for their opinion seems to work best for me. I find I have to do a lot less apologizing later when I do this rather than act impulsively on my emotion.

Indeed. We did try to work collaboratively,
which I think is even better. Didn't mean that
mistakes couldn't be made, but at least it made
it easier to justify the actions, with a record of
our thoughts.

There were a couple of problems though, in that
the limited collaboration that we had was even
too restrictive for some, apparently; and that
the methods of handling problems were wholly
different, for a number of reasons.

I sincerely hope that the staff learns to work as
a unit, rather than as a number of individuals.
Part of the reason I stepped down, as I felt that
I was not helping this. A couple of PMs confirmed
my suspicion.

Anger, fear, aggression... the dark side are they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

I am not worth your time, and yet I do not do all I can to cause you hurt.

MrMark, who was this member banned for speaking out against you by Alex?

It was andy1976uk. I looked for the thread, but apparently Alex removed it. It was one of those things along the lines of "Who thinks so-n-so should be banned?" He basically imploded. "Dyonisian dis-memberment," Starr called it.

andy1976uk got banned for going insane and spamming the forums with heaps of threads talking about how he hated people with asperger's. He kept posting a ton of threads which were pure spam.

i then gave him a second chance after he cooled down. Initially he started to behave, but then after less than a day of being unbanned and promising to keep cool, he did the exact same thing. He started spamming threads in a manner similar to atomika, but he said worse things than "SPAM SPAM SPAM"

I thought so. 'Dyonisian dismemberment'? Feh. Fancy name for megalomaniacal spamming.

This is who you two remind me of. This is getting childish and petty. Besides, MrMark has changed his signature. If you two really are in control of your own destinies, then cease this fruitless bickering. Both of you.

No, it's Rik Mayall as Rick from The Young Ones. Whose behaviour is being emulated by a great deal of posters in this BBS, and in this thread in particular.
