I've been selecting avatars from the site, but someone always picks the same one eventually. Could someone please talk me through the process of uploading one from elsewhere? I just want to find a photo of a plant or something and bring it over. Is it the same as when you copy a link and paste it? Because I know how to do that.

So, first find a nice picture of what you would like as an avatar. Google images is good for that! then save it to your hard drive on your own computer. then go to http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ and click on the Video Tutorial, and it will show you how to shrink your nice pic down into the 130 X 160 size that WP takes as an avatar.

Save the shrunken pic to your hard drive (name it with an 'avi' at the end of the description so you don't mistake it for the larger pic already there) and then go to your profile and click on the 'upload from your computer' and chose that avatar from your pics on your hard drive and click submit!

Two basic methods:

1. Find an avatar, anywhere on the internet, and just copy/paste a link to it into where it wants that in your profile.
2. With any image that you have on youtr own machine (maybe saved from somewhere on the internet and subsequently edited by you - e.g. to crop it for something you like), take the option to "browse" for that image. You don't need to keep the file locally, once WP has taken it for you.

In both case, the image must be of small enough dimensions and file size, as the options in your profile will tell you about.

If you do exceed the limits, a bug in the WP software means there will be no indication that the avatar change has not happened.

I've been trying for over two hours but I can't get it to work. I'm trying to get pictures from avatar sites but WP seems to think they are the wrong type of file. I'll try again next week because I won't have much computer access over Easter.

Try changing the picture format to either .jpg or .gif... it seems to work when I have uploaded those as my avatar.
But I rarely change mine anyways, only once and a while.
