Ive noticed you can only edit or modify posts up to about 20 minutes after you make them. After this time, the edit button is lost and you cant change the post. I'm wondering why this is.

If that's the case, it sounds like bad news, as until very recently (only a few days ago) you got around five hours.

IMO you should always have the option of editing a post you make.

Are you absolutely sure that we're not talking about a one-off glitch here? I make that suggestion because I've just tried editing a post I made in the gaming section 60 minutes ago, and it went through without any problem.

It is what happens with my posts.

Last I knew, you DID have five hours to edit your posts, unless someone else replied to your post before then. This was apparently set up so that people could re-write a post that got a lot of ‘looks’, but no replies.

Locking out the ‘Edit’ function after a reply is likely to prevent a trol from submitting an inflammatory post, waiting for someone else to submit an accusatory reply, and then re-writing the offending post to seem completely innocent so that the OP could then complain about being a ‘victim’ in an unwarranted attack.

Why would you want to change a post after someone has replied to it?

The sticky on this forum viewtopic.php?t=32554 is a useful place to look for answers to many of the questions asked here. It covers the most frequently asked questions and some others.

By quoting an offending post you are breaking forum rules - just saying

It differs based on content, SF.
E.g. if someone makes an inflammatory remark and you are quoting it for reference and responding directly to it, that's not a break of the rules..how you respond to it might be.

If you repost content which is illegal or you know is offensive to the point even the reposters would get flack for it, then again it is breaking the rules.

Yeah, people were abusing the edit function, so it was taken away.

The "edit" function was recently taken away from Vogons for a similar reason. Someone got upset and decided to leave the forum, and tried to delete all of their personal posts before they went.

Hey! I have an idea! I know it seems crazy, but...

Why not decide what you are going to say BEFORE you click the 'Submit' button?

It's so crazy that it just might work!

:D

I used to spend aLOT of time on a forum that did not have an edit function. Instead you could update your posts which was a section at the bottom of your posts that you could write in & it showed as an update while leaving the original posts completely in tact.

Doomworld has an editing facility which seems to remain open indefinitely. I've seen no evidence that it gets abused, although the fact that an edit has been made by the user is made clear on the post, which is fair enough.

one of my pet hates is having a post removed simply because you quoted someone , it's taken quite a while for me to learn not to quote these type of posts ,

and wtf has Fnord been smoking  , 'Why not decide what you are going to say BEFORE you click the 'Submit' button?' that's insanity , does not compute , computer says no , danger Will Robinson , Flob-a-dob blib blob bleeb! :jester: :skull:

There are times when I failed to explain a certain concept well enough.

And then....after a few hours say.....I came up with the way to explain it better.

This has happened to me numbers of times.

I tend not to explain things well when I first write them----but I want to post because it seems important to me to post.

After a little while, an "Eureka Moment" occurs----and I've come up with a better way to present myself!

But....once the power of editing is removed....I'm stuck!

But I guess I COULD explain myself in a subsequent post.
