What difference does placing a member on either one of these lists make? I'm sure this question has been asked before, but the search function here won't locate the relevant thread.

AFAIK the only function it serves is a personal reminder to yourself who your friends and foes are?

I think the idea originally was that you didn't see any of your foes posts.

It partially works but only when you compose a post , while composing if you scroll down to see previous posts any foe's posts would read "This post was made by 'Your Foe' who is currently on your ignore list. Display this post."

I don't bother with the foes list. It's pretty useless.

I can see who is online in my friends list. I don't have a foe list.

There's someone whose posts I simply don't want to see anymore. I suppose it makes sense that that should be impossible, on practical grounds.

I saw a post from Soliloquist a long time ago, which gave instructions how to achieve this ^ . I didn't try it myself, though.

I don't really see how it could be possible: what about quotes? What about indirect references? What about the lost meaning in following threads if the foregoing things were removed?

I honestly don't know. You're likely correct that those types of posts would persist. I just remember reading the instructions which seemed pretty complicated.

Oh well. It could well be that if my plan had worked, half the forum would have fallen silent anyway, LOL

Reading takes a certain amount of effort and focus for me so it is more easy for me to not read posts.

The foe feature doesn't really work.

It's not you, Mountain Goat.

It's probably somebody in one of the "political" threads.

This.

IF...I got to my account I can see the list folks I have labeled "friends" - and see who is on the site.
But I rarely ever check it.

Don't have a foe's list. And from what everyone says apparently it doesn't do anything anyway.
