[You're right. I just didn't want grades to be downplayed, especially to people aspiring for medical school, law school, and top-tier graduate programs. My first semester sucked, BTW.

Med school in particular is way to numbers-conscious. It's a shame the GRE isn't a big deal to most grad schools, since I'm good at cracking those petty little standardized tests. Meh, first semester. There's time to correct any mistakes.
First semesters suck, don't worry about it. My neuroscience professor, when I told him my first semester was bad, told me "First semesters don't count for anything." Also, many graduate programs will only look at the grades achieved in your last two years, making it moot.
I tend to do better when I'm motivated with something interesting; I get good grades in courses that many would consider difficult (like calculus-based physics, A & P, or neurobiology), and poor grades in courses that many people consider easy (like introductory French). That's why my first semester sucked, it was mostly lousy gen-eds that I don't give a damn about (except for English, which I always enjoyed, uncharacteristic of science majors).
