How can I tell whether people are laughing at me or with me?

i just hate that situation... it has happened to me several times that i didn't know whether people were laughing at me or with me. sometimes i seem to understand, but i can't tell if i'm correct. afaik, the easiest way to know when someone laughs at you is when you said nothing and they're still laughing.

Generally, I just try and amuse myself. Other people getting the joke is a secondary priority. It simplifies things.
