Halliday and Resnick? I just looked it up. Why would you use physics? I shudder at the thought. I am going out of my way to avoid physics like the plague. I already finished slacker physics (algebra-based) and have no intention to take real physics.

I had reckoned my GPA would be more along the lines of 3.2, and worried that I might actually have failed my math class. I got all A's before college, and tend to be a perfectionist. But I'll live. Probably. Merry Christmas to you too.

Oddly enough, physics is one of the few topics I take naturally to (it fits my type of intelligence, which is a really poor memory but with decent problem-solving skills). I was really intimidated early in the semester to the point where I considered dropping it, but my professor was reassuring, I regained my nerve, and got a 97 exam average while enjoying the class to boot. That's why I want to make it my major; I'm good at very few subjects so I figure I should jump on one that I am. :lol:

But in other news, it's kind of a lousy textbook in my opinion.

I've never really heard of people using anything other than University Physics.

I like mechanics just fine, even calc-based mechanics is fun, but electricity and magnetism is the bane of my existence. Or maybe I just never learned it properly because of an acute case of senioritis when we studied that part in AP Physics.

Figure I'll probably get all As again, but at my school all that proves is your not stupid and/or completely wasted 24/7.

It was only 17 credits earned, though it would have been 18 if I had enrolled in trombone choir rather than just showing up to it. That doesn't seem like all that much; I would tend to think you'd have to be a bit of a slacker to be going with just 14 credits unless you also had major commitments outside of school, like an independent research project.

I guess I may as well follow Phagocyte's lead in posting my next semester schedule.

Soviet History
Intro to Abstract Math
Multivariable Calculus
Cell and Molecular Biology
Intro to Microbiology (honors)
Microbiology lab
Microbiology honors seminar (this earns me a writing credit, apparently)
Trombone choir

For 18 total credits.

Also, I am one of 12 students at UMiami to be enrolled in a new independent-study program learning Russian language with the aid of a native speaker. I get graded at the end of it, but I don't earn any credit.

Plus, there is a German history class (covering Reformation-Napoleonic Wars) that I plan on attending but not enrolling in. Don't want to overload myself with more work than I can actually do, so I won't commit to actually being in that class and thus being responsible for doing all the work.

Two As and a B. I am so depressed. I got a C+ in my very first college course (online algebra, how stupid of me to take it online!) and have been fighting ever since to bring my GPA up.

It might be different outside the US, not sure where you are located.

Here in Texas at least high school generally go by a 100 point grade point scale (90+ A, 80+ B, etc) while colleges generally go by a 4 point grade scale (4.0 is A, 3.0 is B, etc)

I'm Canadian, so that's probably why.
My average is 87.5% or something like that. And yes, I should have four courses, but I have a resource period.
Also, it'll probably sink after I hand in my ISU...

And when you said research is more important for grad school, is that just for the hard sciences?

To some extent I got a lucky break, but I'm pretty sure I could have pulled all A's if I had worked harder.

There are subjects outside the sciences?

Just wondering Orwell, how do you have 17 credits? I mean, how long are the classes, and how many credits is each class worth?

Depends on the course and other college things. I know that Mason max credit hours limit is 18, I'm usually at 15 credits though I'm taking 16 credits next semester for the third time.

I never legitimately learned E&M (managed to pull a 5 on Physics B by leaning *very* heavily on mechanics, even to the point of ignoring a free response question on magnetism) so I can't really say for certain if it's harder, but it sure seems to be. Calc-based mech is nothing difficult; if you know the basic mech and can do some calculus it's not a problem to slap them together. Just makes the work take a bit longer.

I didn't see this at first.

1 credit hour normally means 1 hour of class per week, though they kind of BS that with lab courses that are one credit hour and can take up 4 hours a week, or musical ensembles that take, in the case of marching band, anywhere from 6 to 15 hours a week, but whatever. A normal academic course is usually 3 credits (1 hour of class on M, W, and F, or 1.5 hour classes on tuesday and thursday). The credit limit for freshman is supposed to be 17, but I can get an overload if I want. I think they start charging extra if you go over 22, though. No matter, I can just choose to be in classes and not enroll to avoid that problem. My 17 credit hours were 5 regular classes (15 credits) one lab (1 credit) and marching band (1 credit)
