Need some advice/rules on being a College student.
For when/if I go back to College I was confused on what the rules are of being a student. As you know from another topic I LOVED LOVED LOVED! Questioning teachers and rather interact with the teacher than fellow students (the same applied to Elementary and since I did home schooling/phone class&tutors Middle/high school I didn't experience a school environment) SO I still have that "behavior view" of teacher interaction/questioning from Elementary and never learned anything different. SO How would you do teacher interaction/questioning without upsetting your teacher because IMO NOT having the questioning/interaction WOULD DRIVE ME INSANE!! ! So how do I do it correctly? Not sure what else I should add here that's all I can think of as of now. ![]()
being 100% honest here: teachers will HATE you if you start questioning them non-stop.
Solution? Try asking also fellow students so you don't overload your teacher with questions (btw everyone will look funny at you if you ask and ask, not a good start/way to be liked),
but work first on lowering your anxiety, it sounds like it's something more than just wanting to ask and ask.

Computerlove is right, in college you shouldn't question the lecturers in the middle of the lecture.
To your classmates, you will appear insufferable (not to mention, prolonging the lecture won't go down well), and to the lecturers, you will be seen as a know-it-all.
If you genuinely want to ask questions, write them down and ask at the end of the lecture; most will be happy to ask them so long as they are politely worded and not attempts to 'catch them out' or show off.
Answering questions is ok, though perhaps not every question.
edit; I'm not trying to put you down; I was the same as you in high school, I used to love asking questions. It's different in college though because unlike teachers, your professors will probably know more about their subject than you do. Your classmates are also likely to be as interested in the subject as you are, so your own knowledge will not stand out as much. There will be people who ask questions during lectures, but if you sit quietly and listen to them, you will realise that most sound silly and pretentious.
I agree that you should write your questions down as you are listening in class. If your questions are about the actual topic of the lecture, you can ask them when the prof says "Are there any questions?" If your question is a tangent, then you may email it to the prof or bring them to office hours. EVEN THEN, the answer you'll get will probably be in the form of "Here's where you can read more about that if you're interested, this source will answer your questions" instead of the prof spoon-feeding the answer to you.
Remember that your professors have to divide their time between all the students in the class (they aren't a one-on-one tutor for just you) so in a class of 20+ people you should only be taking up 1/20th of their time at most. Even if they are available during office hours, you should not expect to be able to spend the entire office hour period having conversations with them, because there are other students they have to attend to.
Yes, you do not want to ask questions during a lecture as that would appear very rude to the teacher and your fellow peers. Always wait till after lectures to ask questions. I imagine too many questions would make you appear "needy" (if that is the correct word).
In my experience, teachers have been happy enough with me asking questions. I only ask about topics related to the learning material and save more off-topic questions till after/before class. I never try to ask too many questions, so I have no experience with how a teacher would react. However, I can imagine some kid asking me a ton of questions. I would be annoyed.
Good luck with your quest for higher education! Ask questions and learn all you can. ![]()
I think my questions became too much since I heard from someone that "The Psychology teacher didn't know how to answer my questions so she was avoiding me so she didn't have to answer them." It's sad that my questions were too much for THE TEACHER WITH A PHD DAMN IT!! !! !! !! !! ! Also I'd "hang out" in her office since I liked the interaction and rather interact with the teacher than fellow students. Teacher>students (perhaps try to change that behavior) Thanks for the tips though.
don't hang out, it's creepy, and will in 99% of the cases be seen by everyone (classmates, other teachers) as "this girl wants a good grade... she must be sleeping with the teacher..."
adivce: get hobbies, joins clubs.

hi zeldapsychology,
I've just started University again & I think I may have just made the very mistake you speak of
I would much rather have that teacher-student relationship as well.
Over here we're allowed/encouraged to ask relevant questions in lectures. I'm kind of reserved in that capacity, & often I find that if I have a question it gets answered anyway if I wait a few minnutes/wait until a break or the end of the lecture.
I think it's right that it's annoying for people if you ask too many questions - in one of my practical classes I'm pretty sure I've come off as ridiculous for doing so
Oh well. them's the breaks.
I have had a problem in that other students don't seem to share my enthusiasm and I find that quite difficult. I don't want to get paranoid about being seen as a nerd or weirdo, yet it's really inportant for me to stay interested & focussed because earlier I had problems with focus & ended up vropping out, which I really wish I hadn't.
I'm quite intense when I'm focussed though - I think it makes me stand out, but .. i'll just have to deal with it I guess. ![]()

OMG! Sounds exactly like me!! ! I think students didn't like my questioning in class behavior since there were a stack of papers of students who had issues with me.
I'm going to a Community College so most of the professors are a little less strict than in a bigger college or university. Most of my professors actually encourage asking questions in class, so long as they are on topic.
It does get incredibly annoying when one person asks question after question in lectures (my Bio lecture is worst, seeing as it is at 8 a.m.), but most of the questions are some of the same ones others in the class need answered anyway.

i'm at university, in australia, & we are encouraged to ask questions. They say usually several people will have the same question but no one will ask, so please ask away - it's helpful for everyone.
We don't get too many people asking off topic questions, so that's not really an issue I guess.
I try to be tactful when asking questions in smaller classes, but at the same time I never really thought about others having an issue with it!
I did overhear two guys sitting next to me talking quietly about 'she gets stuck on something' & I wondered if they were talking about me
but .. they could have been talking about anything. It reminded me not to be too .. stubborn, anyway.
last week I only got 6.5 out of 10, & I had asked a lot of questions, so that put me off doing it anyway.
I'm starting to learn that too much enthusiasm can be annoying for others, & to temper my emthusiasm so that I can ask questions calmly that are smart & related to what I absolutely DO need to know. ![]()
