I want to go to a community college to transfer into a University. Is that a smart thing to do?

I would recommend it because it's cheaper and the class sizes are smaller. I went to a community college.

It is not a bad idea if you aren't offered a good scholarship when in high school. Just take classes there and then try to transfer, be aware though that most of your classes will only count as electives and will not go towards your major at most schools.

It's a great idea. You can go to a community college for two years and have an associates degree, then transfer that to a university. If you live in the US, then a lot of state schools have arrangements with community colleges to transfer all credits.

You also get an associates degree in two years, while even if I complete 3.5 years at the university, all I have is an unfinished degree. And the first two years will be a lot less expensive. I wish I did it that way.

Yes, you are!

If you did not do well enough to get the most prestigious diploma in school, then I would say that is the right thing to do.

Staff do an excellent job preparing you to go to a four-year college if this is the case. They really give you good insight about making the right decision for yourself!

Definitely make sure of this before committing to a given community college. It would be a pain to get through it all and find it to not be the case.



This can heavily depend on the community college...and the individual staff members for that matter. I've heard some horror stories from people that have gone to the community college near me, and I've also heard some really good things. Make sure to check the place out before making your decision.

What are these stories all about?

That's a very smart thing to do.

The usual stories about college environments. Professors that are either the most amazing teachers ever encountered, or the type that needed a job, and have one, and as long as they do the job to the absolute minimum required level, they get to keep it.

Also heard from a couple people that the whole transfer of credits got pretty botched up for them, since they were told one thing by one side and a different thing by the other side.

And my mom thought that was the best thing to do!

Electives are pretty easy to transfer over normally, but anything more towards your specific major might be iffy.

I really want to know why colleges even have electives at this point. I'm sure basket weaving is a useful skill for making one a more well rounded individual.

Elective = additional class to take
additional class to take = additional tuition to pay
additional tuition to pay = happy college

More than that, most electives (key word most) are in-major electives for somebody. Some of these classes wouldn't be possible without students randomly taking them, since they wouldn't have enough people enrolled to be worth teaching. Same reason people end up not being able to take a class they needed, not enough people in the class, and nobody wanted to take it for the hell of it.
