I grew up knowing I would be a cartoonist. Eventually, reality set in, and I decided to major in a science. Then reality set in once again, and I discovered that almost all of my work experience is either arts or politics related. I design things. But I don't get paid steadily, and I don't have much formal training. I think if I had more skills, I'd be doing better. I know about the differences between digital image formats, and can muddle my way around GIMP and Photoshop, but I feel like I need more help.

What would be more worth while for me? Art school, teaching myself, seeking a mentor, I don't even know. I mean, I never really figured that being an artist would be a viable move for me, but it seems like one of my brighter options.

the best way may depend on where you want to go.

Artist in the sense of a painter or cartoonist? Then I think you can teach yourself, maybe using some of the many tutorials on the web.

If you want to go for professional design, you should go for a design school. Design is much more than forms and colors, you would need lots of knowledge about materials and how they can be processed or for web design you would need knowledge of the technology, user interface elements, html and so on. You can teach that to yourself too, but it's not very likely that without a degree of any kind you could find a job. (That would be for Europe, maybe things are diffeent where you live)
