Making Money for College

Dear All

I only have two years left of HS, and I'm wondering if anyone has advice on making money for college. I've already thought about investing in the currency exchange market. Does anyone have any further advice? Thanks in advance.

Uhhhhh, I would avoid the commodities market (especially currency) at this point. Right now, commodities are coming down as the recession will reduce demand and the US dollar is actually staging a nice comeback as the place to put money in these times. The commodities market is extremely volitile and has a very low long term rate of return.

At this point, you really do not have much in the way of investment options due to your short time frame. I would suggest saving the money in a simple Money Market Mutual Fund which should keep it safe (as long as you do your homework) and simply working your assets off for the rest of the money.

Hm. I would say that time would better be invested studying harder so you can win better scholarships.

Seconded. And if you do well enough in college, you can become TAs or work in labs for professors. Also, as soon as you start college, go to the career center and find out how to get into their online job-search engine. The one for Oregon State University has all sorts of part-time jobs coming up on their job search sites that pay decent (~$9/hr) for easy jobs that form around your schedule. Things like replacing aging signs in the labs around campus, walking around campus with a laptop checking wireless signals, watching over the language lab, etc. I seriously wish someone had told me about this site the moment I started, instead of working at Target for 5 years.

Also, during the summer, if you can stand the hard work and sun, you can do roofing and/or painting of houses. It's mindless, repetitive work (a bonus for some ASDs), and it pays extremely well. But, if you can, start applying for internships as soon as possible (they usually start coming up for application at the beginning of the school year, even though they don't start until the next summer).
