I know I'm not the first navel-gazing genius to say this, but if she's checking your wallet before she lets you in the door, does that really tell you that she's prepared to be an open, honest and loving partner in a relationship?

I am an artist, and a poor handler of money at that. I will most likely be on the non-wealthy side of things for the rest of my life. It would be awkward for me were I to start dating someone who's swimming in cash - it brings up all sorts of issues that I don't want to deal with, including the constant suspicion that I might be a "gold digger."

It's what's in the head and the heart, not what's in the wallet, that concerns me.

Bingo.

I married for love. That's the only way to do it.

I am broke. I am trying to build my bankroll playing poker and looking for alternative sources of income (not very much) in the meantime.

My girlfriend is the most wonderful girl in the world. I cannot imagine being with anyone else, and I'm going to marry her when I manage to get a stable income.

The screen name sounds like CA. Medium income is much higher here.

Really? The US Census Bureau said the median household income for California in 2008 was $61,017--higher than that national average I quoted, but not MUCH higher. Perhaps you are not aware of your privilege, if everyone you know makes more than that.

It varies quite a bit by county. I am in one of the wealthier ones, I do realize that.

I was going to reply a similar message. Scrolling down, I was hoping someone was feeling the same; thank you!

Assuming all decent women are gold diggers.

"Decent woman" confuses me, are you rating them on some superficial scale? Do you mean decent as in honest, moral, hard working?

Are there plenty of "indecent" women you can get and feel that when your income increases you can upgrade?

My fear is that your use of the term "decent" is one that is arm candy, that other men will envy you for having. If that is what you mean, dependent on your area, $100, 000 would not make it.
Figure out how much money you would need to pay for a clothing budget of $12,000 a year, about $3000 minimum for hair stylist, price at least three nice vacations a year, a new upscale vehicle for the decent woman, country club membership, a "decent home " (3000 sq ft plus, depending on your area, of course if you live in NY, it can be much smaller, places like Atlanta, larger), interior decorator for the home, laundry and cleaning services. Birthday and any other holiday gifts need to be WOW, several spa retreats through the year... I will try to come up with a more complete list.

And 51 can be called middle age, the end of middle age if you expect to live to 102.

I just hate it when people refer to women as some kind of commodity to acquire.

A lot of it is on confidence. My husband had a major slump during his teen years, and subsequently was not approached by girls because of it. When he visited New Zealand, he often wore a coat that forced him to stand straighter because of wires sewn into the lining, and girls openly flirted with him; he had no idea they were doing it at the time, but now he knows. When he came back, three girls, including myself, vyed for his attention. He actually had enough confidence to ask me to date him after nearly a year long crush on me.
If you really want someone to notice you, be confident; don't let it show that you are worried about your age or your income. However, don't be arrogant; nothing is worse than a man who thinks he's God's gift to women.

Probably a lot. That is if you want to find a materialistic whore.

There needs to be a term for men that look at women as a commodity, an object, a "thing" to attain, something they rate on a scale that includes the term "decent". Find a nasty name to call the men who treat/think of women in these terms, and quit calling the women nasty names. BTW real whores make a whole lot more money than most wives, even the ones married to rich men AND get time off. And "whoremonger" doesn't work, because it still refers to women negatively.

There are a few terms for that, backagain, but please abstain from posting them here
