It bothers me that a job would FORCE you to drive. Several staff at my school (past and present) don't drive, but the transit is pretty good here.

What if you had a medical condition that made you unable to drive? (I might probably have a hard time because I have motor issues). When I was 9, I went on a Disney ride where kids could drive cars and I kept hitting the curve and crashed into the cars in front of me when we stopped at the end. Most of the kids my age were not actually having those problems. That is, the ones I saw on the ride of course.

Also, what about people who can't afford a reliable car? I'd assume a lot of cheap cars would be unreliable.........

Well it seems most don't really care if you can't afford a car, but they damn well want you to have one.

I don't really care about the environment if it inconveniences me and I've seen people use "being good for the environment" as an excuse to get away with things, like the Sims 3 games no longer coming with instruction books (good for the environment supposedly) yet they did stupid things like release a new town in store in a case that was empty with nothing in it but a code to download it. The could have put the code on a game card and not wasted so much packaging.

Even with my lack of caring I can tell many environmentalists "I have a smaller carbon footprint than you. I don't own a car." Nearly everywhere I go I walk and I occasionally take the bus.

I would suggest they make the instruction book out of hemp paper......hemp is much more renewable than trees. As for cars being bad for the environment well yes in an area with lots of traffic all the time the air is going to be a bit nasty, however its not like the chemicals in the exaust are anything the planet is not already exposed to on a regular basis so trying to relate global warning to car pollution kinda confuses me because it seems like two different issues. I mean look at the history of global warming its not uncommon for the planet to go through major environment changes so I don't understand why people have the goal of stopping a natural process.

So in short I do care about the environment but I refuse to jump on the environmentalist bandwagon because the've got it all wrong.

Well good I guess there might be hope, uhh it's just very frustrating but there's gotta be something that does not require a vehicle in my area.

Are there any businesses in your area that are close enough to where you live that you can walk there?

If there are then ask yourself what jobs they might have that you can do. Cleaning, retail work etc. Print up some flyers and stuff them into the letterboxes of the local businesses.

The look at the houses around you. Could you do work for the people there in their homes? Dog walking, lawn mowing, cleaning, babysitting. Print up some more flyers for those things and stuff some more letterboxes.

If you are offering to do work for people in their houses, make sure that you are safe. Tell somebody where you are going and when you will be back home.

There's a head shop, a liqour store, a couple fast food places, a grocery store, a thrift store and some other crap....so yeah there is but the fast food and grocery store are not an option because I suck at anything fast paced. The head shop is not the best there are much better ones but if they were hiring I'd be willing to work there and I am not sure about the liquor store.

And I could see if there's any odd jobs like that around.....no babysitting or lawn mowing though, and I would certainly make sure to let someone know where I'm at just in case.

Other then that though I can take the bus to other places I know most of the routes and how to get places.

Marry me and we''ll move to Switzerland 2% unemployment and a real 2% not the work 1 hr per week and your "employed" bs that goes on in this country,

Best of all nobody cares if you don't have a car (traintastic nation :D ) even better than Japan would you believe .

I had jobs thrown at me without trying/experience though I couldn't accept them I was in crazy person mode.

I am glad I am not American (I feel sorry for you )

I'm in the same boat. I'm afraid to drive right now, my bf's car might not pass if I went to take the test and it's an olds-mobile but I want to drive it. What my problem is, is that to me driving is like playing dodgeball. I think I'm too freaked out to drive, but I when I drive country roads or anywhere else i'm fine, just not city traffic or freeways or god forbid the interstate. I did that once and I hardly looked when I turned onto the highway, I have trouble with dexterity and I live in the country so I need to drive.

Got my permit and 2 months to practice, and I think I'll do fine but until then I plan on taking a train into the city for work this summer. I would rather do that and take the metro than drive anyways.

Move to the city?

I am in a city...that is why I figured it might be easier to get a job without a car.

Do you ever mention where you live SweetLeaf? Never actually heard what city you in I think.

There are a lot of jobs around here that don't require cars.

I have a couple times but yeah I am in the Denver, Colorado area and I know there's gotta be some things that don't require a vehicle.

IDK about Colorado, but in the areas Ive used Craigslist for a Job, they tend to ask for a vehicle because usually the jobs they are posting for tend to be far enough off the beaten tracks (Bus routes usually) that figure theres going to be an issue with employees being there on time or getting htere at all.

Dog Walking and Pet Sitting Jobs ask for vehicles anymore, as is my understanding, usually because the people that are hiring for that are running Firms that do it. The ads you're probably seeing are 3rd Party Companies that have people come to them to provide a sitter. They want you to have a vehicle because nobody else is going to provide a ride to the client's home.

My Suggestion would be to go take a walk around your neighborhood and look for "Work Available" signs, and just go ask around. Thats how I got my current job, which initially was 3 blocks from my house (Ive moved since).

Good Luck,
Aldran

Well I actually could arrange for rides in some instances, but yeah I guess I can see that as a valid point...maybe its not the best place for me to look for work.

Also I do plan on it though I better venture down the bus routes a bit since all that's in walking distance I could do is a head shop, a liqour store and a thrift store maybe the bar. Otherwise there is a closed liqour store turning into some loan/insurance place, fast food, a pawn shop and king supers which aren't hiring or I would fail at.

Now if I hop on the bus there are animal shelters, pet stores, safer bars/liquor stores, more thrift stores and lots of other options so yes I think I will continue with my plan to go get applications, fill them out, get them in, respond to calls ect. and all that good stuff. Oh and i could potentially get a seasonal job at Red Rocks concert venue.......and have transportation that can be arranged as I know someone also applying for that.
