Homebased Jobs?

I'd be happy to live somewhere that I could just walk to work - where I live, several planned communities where businesses and homes are clustered together have been planned and announced, but they never seem to actually happen. Something falls through and there is half a development and a huge vacant area. Plus it's hard to get your employer to put his office in your planned community, and stay there for the long term. These planned communities don't seem to be feasible.
I'd really like to live somewhere where I could get along either walking or on a bicycle with no need for a private motor vehicle or public transportation at all.
There are a few places where one could almost do this. Avalon, California on Santa Catalina Island would work, but that is supposedly a really expensive place to live.
Nearly anywhere else that I can think of, there is a need of a car or public transportation at least on occasion.
