Is it possible for someone with AS to become a doctor?

I don't see why not, AS may be very useful in the medical field, as long as you feel you'll be confortable being in such a crowded enviroment I say go for it. Be careful with how you deal with people though, you don't want to be like House ^_~

There is a really good job search manual called Follow Your Bliss. One of the keys is to make sure you are following your bliss and not someone else's.

I don't see why an Aspie cannot become a doctor but personally I think if an Aspie were to become one he/she would do better conducting scientific research in a laboratory.

you can be a doctor if you want to be. I don't think that AS, in and of itself, precludes someone from becoming a successful doctor. I do think, however, that you might want to consider specialties that are less people-intensive if you find that you can't deal with patients. I think that people with AS would be more effective as pathologists or radiologists because those specialties require more of an analytical approach and don't involve as much people contact.

You state that you want to get into gastroenterologist because of bowel-related problems that you've had. My concerns would be. Along with urology and OB/GYN this is probably one of the most embarrassing experiences for a patient. Can you handle an interaction with a patient coming into talk about farting or blood in his s**t? Can you handle talking about hemorrhoids without making the patient feel already uncomfortable? Having to come in with sh*****g and fating problems to the doctor can be quite traumatic for the patient. Would you be able to not make fun of the patient or to not sound insulting or harsh? That's my concern there.

I also want to become a medical doctor, but the only thing I'm afraid of is that I'll be really bad at it (due to communication skills) or the stress will be too much for me to deal with. I've been considering other careers (research, forensics, etc) but I feel as though I'm looking at things I don't really want to do, at least not as much as I want to become a medical doctor. I'm just wondering how difficult it would be to enter the course when they know I have AS

I'm doing a BSc in Biomedical Science, and I've already dissected a cadaver, so that aspect is no problem.

Perhaps a veterinarian?

That's what I keep telling myself. I wont even go to the doctors, dentist, opticians etc without my mum because i can't stand to be alone with someone i don't know.

But as long as you have the ability and would be comfortable in that envirnoment, then i don't see why not

On one Aspie group I was on, there was a woman who had an AS daughter that was in medical school.

I work with 2 Doctors who have Asperger's. Both are absolutely brilliant!

My uncle was a double specialist doctor who owned his own practice. He had severe AS and horrible social skills. He was an excelent doctor and made good money. He published papers, and tought classes.
