My boss moving my computer every night? Need privacy!
Of course I did. The context of the post you refer to assumes the existence of such laws and then draws in some complicating factors that are conveniently elided in the facile one-liners that you deliver like some semi-retarded Clarence Darrow of the internet.
Once again, let me reiterate that the existence of laws exist that in some measure are intended to protect the disabled from wrongful termination on the basis of disability DOES NOT mean that
1- These laws are evenly, predictably and fairly enforced
2- Wolfpup would necessarily be covered under these laws (especially problematic if the disability is interfering with his work, i would think)
3- Wolfpup has the resources to hire an attorney who will be willing to pursue the cause
4- Intent, damages and other elements of the tort in question can actually be proved
and that's just off the top of my head.
At the last place I worked, I was next to the shared printer and the cube wall was low enough that anyone at the printer was looking right at me. It bugged me, but I focused on the work. Over the years I've learned to silently tell myself "Ah, phooey" and let it go. Not easy at first, but a worthwhile survival tactic.
If your boss is trying to make you more visible, then there have probably been complaints she is trying to address. Bosses don't always tell employees about every single complaint as soon as they happen, unless the boss is a jerk or a rookie. It's not a good use of time. Leave the email alone, move to the visible position and try to help your boss instead of fighting an already lost battle. She should have told you why the computer was moved without you having to ask. But it's done and gone and you have today's work to do.
What you need to deal with is the anxiety which is all over your post. Look for ways to alleviate stress at work. Find ways to decompress at home. Do good things for yourself. If all else fails, look into meds with the person doing the diagnosis. Millions of us have done this for thousands of years. You can do it, too. Can too. Can too infinity.

You may not want to hear it, but I'm on the "find a way to adapt and deal with it" bandwagon. If your job requires that you be visible, then if you want to keep the job, you have to deal with not being able to hide. And most jobs do not allow you to be invisible, so learning how to cope with it now will help you for the rest of your life. It's not easy but myself and other Aspies here have done it so you can too. Quitting won't help - this situation or one very like it will arise again.
It'll probably sound corny, but these are the parts of life that I call "growing pains" - life throws challenges at you and it's only by pushing yourself through the discomfort, or pain, that you grow into a stronger, wiser person.
Whatever you want to call it, I would strongly recommend against telling the boss that wolfpup can't or won't do something the boss wants him to do on the basis of a vaguely defined, poorly understood and little known of mental disability that hasn't even been diagnosed yet.

One thing a few decades of working has taught me is that business has fashions, just like clothing.
Right now, my company (well, I'm a contractor, but you know what I mean...
is into an 'openness' (is that a word?..
kick, and is redesigning the entire campus into more 'open' cubicles, where everyone can see everyone else, and also the bosses can see the employees, and vice versa. It's supposed to increase productivity, raise employee moral, and improve sex lives, for all I know..
If it's that much of a problem, consider some possible alternatives. If it's that much trouble, maybe they could put a laptop in; it takes up less space, and can be moved more easily. I think it sounds like the boss is concerned about attendance? there are good and bad bosses, they either move up or out in time.
I don't know about letting them know about the diagnosis. Check with the EEOC (if you're in the US, or appropriate agency for employment in your country) first. Some states (like mine) have what's called a 'right to work' law, mainly for keeping unions out (whole 'nother story), but the upshot is that you can be fired for any reason, or no reason at all. Also, check with the people who are making the diagnosis, they should have some information for you. I have 'a reputation for being eccentric' at work, but no one knows about the specifics, except people in a non-supervisory position that I can trust.
I find that if you give most bosses what they're asking for, and a little bit more, they leave you alone.
I actually agree with Stewie.
Support isn't always saying you agree and being nice, it also includes being given a kick up the backside when you try to avoid something just because it is beyond your immediate comfort zone.
The more you do something, the easier it gets. All hiding does is ensure you never progress any further.
Hey that's okay if you're really high-functioning, but a lot of us aren't so we do need some concessions. I'm sure all that wolfpup is asking is that the computer not be moved all the time. If that's all it takes to ensure a happy worker, it's cheap at the price. Of course, I think we have far more civilised and progressive attitudes towards our workers here than in the USA and much of this is thanks to our unions.

We also had to rearrange the desks in here-and that was for no reason. They claimed they needed more space for computers, when actually there’s all kinds of space left empty already. Tons of old systems that could have been taken out-many weren’t even running, and tons of empty space.
I really freaked out over that, as the new arrangement doesn’t give me much privacy. I used to sort of have an enclosure-partition wall on two sides, desks on the other two, with a shorter partition in front. The new situation is basically open on two sides.
Geez, I’m freaked out just talking about this…starting last Wednesday my computer started getting pushed back every night. I assumed the custodians were moving it, and I asked the second shift person about it, and he gave some weird evasive answer. A couple of days later I got this email from my boss:
“I have had a few complaints that people can't see if you are there are not when they go up to the window. You really should be a little more visible especially when there is not a student in there. I pushed your computer back to see if that would bring you more into view but noticed that you pushed it back forward. David said you were asking about it. Please try to be more visible when people come up to the window.”
This is...bizarre. First, I’m in direct view of the window (yay), and you can’t even SEE my computer from the window. Who are these people that are complaining? My first thought is they must have vision problems.
Okay...I actually use my computer to try to block me, by swinging out it’s door to at least sort of make it so people can’t see my face (or at least I can’t see them). When there’s a student there, they handle anyone coming to the window-that’s their only job. And otherwise I try to pay more attention to what’s going on out there.
So...okay, technically with the door swung open you probably can’t see my face, but I’m certainly still visible, and it’s not my computer that’s blocking me at all.
I moved my computer back myself a few days in a row, and moved it back into position when I got here. Last night I left it where it normally is, and sure enough, it was moved again when I got here this morning.
I don’t know what to do. I’m afraid with all this crap that’s been going on this last year I’m going to get fired. I don’t have a college degree because I can’t make it through at least some classes. I can’t do many types of work as I’m not super coordinated, and many types of things freak me out (and I certainly can't deal with jerks or...kind of the bullying mentality that a lot of people would have that work lower paid jobs). I’ve been able to do this current job (ideal would actually be doing computer repair-wish someone would let me do that
If/when I get fired I’m not sure what I’m going to do.
No one will even understand anything I wrote here, but oh well
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I tend to get absorbed in what I'm doing, and don't necessarily notice someone right away. The way people act, this is apparently a "character defect" or something
Watch the movie "Office Space", I sympathize you.
WONDERFUL. I just had this....PERSON...who's been for some reason treating me HORRIBLY all year in a variety of instances pick up a check from me...and while doing so said "I see you're hiding behind your computer again" or something like that. UNBELIEVABLE.
I should have guessed it was her...again...complaining about me. Who else would it be?
She continues to act like our time isn't important, or we have no say in things just because she has a better job, and has on at least a few occasions flat out MADE UP STUFF (like that I wasn't doing something she had asked-never mind that IF SHE ASKED, I NEVER HEARD IT).
I'm creeped out just having to be in the same room with her at this party yesterday. Most everyone else here I like, and I could happily randomly babble about tech stuff with the people at my table yesterday, but then I have to have my stress level go th rough the roof because of this ONE PERSON.
Oh well, I'm just going to try to not think or worry about it. I'll just try to deal with it if I get fired. ![]()
I didn't see most of these responses until now-I guess I accidentally deleted the email about them or something.
I'm pretty upset and mad right now, so gloves off
Well is SHOULD BE. EVERYONE should try to accommodate others. There are ALL KINDS of different issues people have, and any kind of physical or psychological or neurological issues should try to be WORKED AROUND.
If we're not willing to do that, then we're JUST ACTING LIKE BIG DUMB ANIMALS, unwilling to overcome what's programmed into us.
This is a BIG deal for me, but not remotely an actual issue for me job. This person I mentioned in my previous post who apparently trigged this has done these types of things to me SEVERAL times this year. In EVERY CASE what she's doing has NOTHING to do with me being able to do my *ACTUAL* job, ie the ACTUAL REASON I'M HERE, and has everything to do with something she's randomly decided needs to be done a certain way, regardless of how it affects other people, and regardless of how much time it takes us, or anything else. Just off the top of my head, earlier this year, instead of just LOOKING IN THIS ROOM to see if there was anyone using it, I was supposed to take time every day to ask another person to waste HER TIME compiling a schedule for what's going on in there, and etc. etc.. NO ONE ELSE I talked to thought any of this was efficient. I'm probably not supposed to respond back to this crap, but I poked about 9 trillion holes in this stupid thing, and when my boss later read through my message entirely, she said "well...yeah, that is all correct..."
And yeah, that's not how I'm supposed to be doing things, but you know what, even aside from Asperger's that makes me dumb enough to not catch on until recently that I shouldn't be doing that, EVERY PERSON should be able to stand up for themselves at work, improve situations they see to make them more efficient for themselves and others and the job. And NO ONE should get to create busy work for others, or make up stuff about them, or whatever else.
You know what? I AM SCREWED. I'm in a low paying job (that is at least in related to a field I love, and that I typically enjoy...except for this CRAP this year). I have NO CHANCE of ever getting married or having a family at this point. I'm NOT ABLE to finish college, despite having a 147 IQ when they tested my in high school (because I was having problems then that were related to AS too), and I don't get to be part of the life of the only child I ever WILL have, etc., etc.
What's sick is I CAN DO WORK. Most people like me apparently (that's what I'm typically told) there are a lot of things I could really be beneficial for. All I need with most of this stuff is fairly minor allowances. ANYONE should be the same help, whether it's because of neurological and psychological issues, or because they're in a wheel chair and can't get up stairs. Either way WE SHOULD NOT BE TREATING EACH OTHER LIKE REPTILES.
I've been pursuing a diagnosis for a variety of reasons. I'd like to be able get help with a LOT of different areas.
But AS, and OCD are not things you can just "GET OVER"-just get help for in a variety of ways. And I *AM* positive the majority of the time (or neutral, or whatever). If there are things that I would literally rather DIE than do, that is not something I can just GET OVER. (I have been working the last few years to try to say hi and by to people-I think don't do it well, and probably come across weird half the time, but at least I'm aware of it now and they know I'm putting in the effort).
I can definetly see where your coming from and I find it rediculous that the desk keeps moving back an forth so many times when its obvious that shes the one moving it back at the end of the day.
instead of playing back and forth mind games as a boss she should have confronted you face to face since by having to continually move the desk back to your uncomfortable zone she must realize that you are having some serious problems with being viewed in that range
at that point you would be able to easier explain to her the circumstances about how you are able to get the job done fullly from where your desk was before
I wouldn't want to be in the middle of everyone either all day at work I would go crazy
so I know how you feel Gl and your pretty smart so I doubt they would fire you over this hopefully your guys communication barrier is lifted maybe you can buy her some starbuck drink an try to break the ice a bit thats one my comrades used to do with our female boss although it didnt help much
she was still kind of strict an annoying
If it were me, I wouldn't want to buy her anything but rat poison but that is a bit mean. Seriously, there is nothing wrong with wanting some reasonable concessions, such as having privacy in the workplace.
Just about anybody would feel irritated and uncomfortable if their desk and computer arrangement were changed by another person after they left work. It's very rude of this woman to do such a thing without consultation and with no particular rationale.
To the people who said mean things to Wolfpup, I know empathy is not the be all and end all in life, but a little compassion would never go astray. Would you like the same kind of inconsideration applied to you? I don't think so. In that case, why not give Wolfpup a break instead of making cruel comments?

Pandora, I am Mister Empathy, OK? But I have no sympathy for people who respond to a thoughtful, well composed post with captious objections like "you didn't answer my question," when I clearly did. If we could all focus on the issue at hand rather than trying to score points this discussion would proceed a lot more smoothly and might even be productive. I know I can be a little prickly at times, maybe I even go too far, but most of us on WP go too far in the other direction.
If you succeed in convincing wolfpup to make an issue out of this you will only succeed in helping her lose her job.
That's ridiculous. They've got a duty of care to consider their workers' privacy and comfort. He could have had his computer set up ergonomically and the boss shifting it might have made it unergonomic and therefore set him up for back, neck, or shoulder injuries.
