I Don't WANT to Work!
to have money coming in without worrying about where it comes from, but as lovely as it sounds to have the whole day to myself, to avoid the social difficulties and anxiety (and I have fantasized about it), I shudder at the thought of being so dependent upon the system to support me! Personal independence is a wonderful thing if it can be achieved.
I can vouch that the work world is much more anxiety provoking than college or grad school ever were.
Hello, I'm new here, I have AS and never talk about it usually. I agree with your opening post cyb0rg and feel the same way, but I can also see how some people might find your particular wording choice offensive, though I do not.
I have tried working numerous times and it never turns out well. I have a college degree, but couldn't care less about that, as I find I learn a lot more from my own independent research on subjects than I ever do in any classroom. College degrees, like money, only hold any value because society insists that they do. If society collapsed they'd just be kindling, used to help keep people warm.
I applied for disability and was denied. I was going to reapply, but talked to an attorney first who said they'd just turn me down again. He said that since I have a college degree the committee who decides who gets disability would just assume that I am capable of working, regardless of what I tell them.
So, I am quite curious, cyb0rg, how you managed to get disability, and so quickly, while having two degrees? Any helpful advice you could give would be most appreciated.
Security guard? No. I work in a warehouse. Good work, steady pay.
There are only so many packages you can ship in/out without getting in the other employees' way, so they started a second shift. I've been a "night person" since the early 1980s, so it works out well.

Everyone can do something whilst disabled but what matters is whether they can do the job efficiently enough to make the difference between the simple sum below.
[A:Total cost of providing compatible environment to enable a "willing" benefit claimant to try and perhaps succeed in outputting "work" of an acceptable consistency and sustainability, considering random quality checks as well] (Whether at a comfort zone workplace or home)
[B:Total, consistent, sustainable output value (Currency) of benefit claimant "working"]
IF B=Greater than A and is further Financially viable (extra accounting etc) result, then Claimant can work.
I think the OP, Cyb0rg, perhaps was wording his thoughts a bit strongly.
If he still thinks an "a**hole tax" is a good comment, then I don't think it's acceptable.
So, in fairness, here is the black and white of my situation and why I felt the need to comment.
2 years ago, worked out that I just could not handle average workplace stress in a functional way.
Went to doc's = Antidepressants (did not work- fluox and citalo)
WEnt through the system.. mental health team, CBT sessions x4, psychichiatrist, psychologist (2 x- suggested ADHD assessment) End result of ADHD as per signature. HMmmmmmmm, makes sense to me.
I have considerable anxiety, but what annoys me, is that I don't know why, ie I don't have good childhood cause, that I'm aware of. I am too aware and self=conscious..... To be noticed and pointed out is FAIL!
I have been on benefits for 2 years nearly. I have not had to work.
I know I can do quite a few things, but I have to apply my formula above to myself.
Comfort zone is everything.
To be perceived as "different" is Fail once more. (not that it should be a problem, but is that not the problem with anxiety)
Soon, I will have an assessment with the mercenaries at ATOS "healthcare" a group who checks for the Department of Work and pensions in the UK, who have commiteed notably atrocities of diagnosis (many appeals have been won in the courts) and are regularly not even capable to assess people, as they are not medical professionals.
They tick boxes on computer questionnaires.
From my adhd assessment I have a full psychological report, self reported and specialist analysed.
I believe I can totally resist even attending ATOS on the grounds of symptoms of
depression, anxiety, self consciousness, mood issues, personality issues, sensitivity issues as well as ASD and ADHD-pi symptoms. My frustration is epic.
As a lifetime social/health issue avoidant person I now have several health problems which are not good and totally reduce quality of life.
Hence, I believe I could avoid work almost indefinitely OR until I can get suitably medicated/altered, but I don't like the thought of calming meds...side effects etc.
However, I really need to get into working soon for several reasons.
1) Human interaction
2) Exercise, moving
3) Money difference
4) Time kill
etc etc
However, without getting a suitable medication to treat the problems I will be faced with a situation.
A job of comfort zone needs. (good luck with that eh?)
low deadlines
simple tasks, nothing sustained. (probably move these boxes)
Nothing too social of course.
OR face having an explosive meltdown and possible suicide just to get out of the problems.
I'm also a great procrastinator, overthinker.
Apart from that, everything is as can be expected in this world.
I also wonder how the hell people manage in life with even more serious issues.
Still, I believe that people who don't feel like working have a problem to be dealt with in most cases.
I think it's impossible for a healthy minded person to avoid working. That feeling will get them working one way or the other.
For the others' with entitlement attitudes, they are only a small percentage.
Either apply the formula to them or leave them to decay and be happy that they are not screwing up your day too much in the workplace due to their antisocial attitudes.
Well, I don't know who's still awake after reading all that, I'm almost zzzzzzzz myself.
I'm on disability, holding US taxpayers hostage until they vote for real universal health care. I agree. a**hole tax.
Then again, I have disabilities besides autism.... like cancer.
