So unemployment is low in the U.S. (3.9%) and it's even lower in my county. So here's my question...why don't the job ads in my area reflect the tight job market? Most postings I see still have ridiculously high requirements even when the job doesn't pay that well. You'd think with the job market this tight, even McDonald's would have to be offering $15 an hour (okay maybe that's an exaggeration, but the job postings in my area make it seem like unemployment is 10% or something).

Anyone? I am still baffled. Recently, I discovered an apprentice posting in my area that asked for four years of experience! This is ridiculous.

So to get into automotive work you need to start in oil change. It’s bottom of the barrel work that anyone off the street can be taught to do. Places require 4 years experience in automotive to get the job. Who with 4 years experience is going take the crap job and crap pay if changing oil?

The posting I'm referring to was for construction. I don't think I'm really cut out for construction in any case, BUT the posting was a good representation of what I've had to deal with searching for jobs in my area. I mean if someone had four years experience in construction, why the hell would they take an apprentice position?
