Portfolios to either replace or supplement an interview?

Hi everyone!

Has anyone ever created a portfolio to supplement an interview or in lieu of an interview? I heard that this is a way for people to present their skills, especially if interviewing is hard. Does anyone have thoughts / experience with this?

Presenting past performance was part of my job interview. I brought a CD with three of my projects. I removed the client information and previous employers information. (They were not copyrighted, or covered by intellectual property agreements.) Each project contained drawings, material lists, concepts, and the other documents that went along with the project. I did not find putting it together to be a big deal. I did get the job.

From what I hear, you should always tailor your portfolio to the job you're interviewing for, unless they specifically tell you not to. And even then.
