would you prefer doing something you like for average income? not bad, you can live with it, but you can never buy a ferrari or a rolex watch. it's a job that you really enjoy that it feels like playing instead of working.

or

doing something you don't like for great income? you can definitely improve your lifestyle with the money but it's a very stressful job.

for me, if i'm single, definitely the first choice. but if i'm married or getting married, i might consider the second one, depends on whether my wife has an income as well.

I do love what I do, it's interesting and it technically and esthetically challenging, the people I work with are all kind, loving and put up with my aspie ways without problems or complaints. I work alone most of the time and have a lot of social interactions so that is the best of both worlds for an aspie. I'm so comfortable with everyone the girls can walk up and hug me from behind with no warning; some other people send a shiver bad my spine if the walk to close. If I made more money I'd be in 7th heaven, but on the other hand I've never been laid off either.

Definitely the former.

The latter will suck your soul out of your body until there's nothing left but a dried-up husk with a fat checkbook.

As long as I can pay my bills and put a little money away for later (not counting on SS or Medicare by the time I'd be ready for it), that's all I need.

What's the point of life if you're not doing something you love?

Some people would say "they call it work because it's not supposed to be 'fun.'" Says who?!?

As much time as people spend at work, it needs to be enjoyable. I could not imagine a life composed mostly of self imposed torture in exchange for a few baubles.

In my case it is ability not just that I like it.

I am unable to do any job not electronics
related, I flop every time and get fired.

Why would I want a ferrari or a rolex watch? Wastes of money. I'd easily be able to live off an average income doing something I like. I'd take minimum wage and be fine. All I need is my internet connection and basic necessities.

Being able to rev a 480hp naturally aspirated 4.3L V8 to 8500rpm would be a good reason for me. I'd still take a Corvette or an older Jap car instead though.

You can't get a stable internet connection living off of minimum wage, unless you live in your parents' basement.

Choice 1. I spent too much time with choice 2 and was completely miserable. Now I'm very poor but have reason to get up and work hard. I know this will pass and someday I will be better off.

Considering I study derivatives and read the FT for fun, I could probably have fun while doing the big money job :P

Choice #1 - life's too short to put yourself through torture. I've been there, done that with some terrible [although decently-paying] jobs and no thanks, don't want to repeat the experience.

[PS: I'd rather an Aston Martin DB9, myself.]

In my case (and in the case of many other people), the choice boils down to doing something I hate for adequate pay, or doing what I love for peanuts.
I have come to hate my job. I have the usual aspie situation of loving my work, but not liking a lot of my co-workers. I work as a supervisor for a government agency. I get along pretty well with the supervisors who are my age or younger (I am 52). The ones who are older are very hostile, though. I am starting to be able to get some overtime. If I start getting a decent amount of overtime, I will make up to $60,000 this year. Without that, more like $52,000.
