What do you put for references?!

I have an application here to work at a big hotel/conference center.
It's asking for


"References (give the names of three persons not related to you, whom you have known for at least one year)"


Pretentious, incorrect grammar aside, I don't have anyone.
I met my boyfriend online three years ago, but we only met in person this past July.
I've had numerous attempts at friendships that failed spectacularly, and even those are within the past few months.
No one knows me but S (bf) and my parents.

Should I not even bother turning it in?

It's not hard to find 3 people who have known you for over a year...

Finding 3 who know you WELL is another thing.

I'd focus on just finding 3 people who know you who don't mind being listed as a reference.

All of mine are people I've not seen on a regular basis in years. Everyone who knows me for a year or longer are basically people I work for who don't qualify.

If that were true, I wouldn't have made the thread.

I wasn't trying to be facetious.

Odds are you come in somewhat regular contact with 3 different people for well over a year, but they likely don't know you well enough to be a reference.

They want 3 people you are close enough to that they can be character references. That's a hard thing to do if you're a loner.

I hate it when they want 3 professional references. I work, for the most part, alone. Who am I going to list?

I provide a mix of people who you know academically and professionally. HR people will look more into the people who you worked with in the past but will also contact any professors as well.

Teachers
Neighbors
People you've worked for in the past
People you've done any type of compensated duties for

Teachers are probably the best ones, just have them vouch your punctuality and effort displayed.

Go for professional people that you've worked with first of all. If you were in school, perhaps you can list some teachers. If you've volunteered, then list the supervisors.

If you dont know enough heads of organizations, then perhaps you can list co-workers.

But its a no no to list any family members or significant others. I've seen quite a bit of applications and some even state that they dont want you listing family or significant others.

This is the problem I always have.

I don't know what to say other than maybe ask WP members you interact with. I'd be a reference for you, I know we don't know each other but I admire your posts. See this is the way my desperate mind works when I have to try to come up with references.

I used to have that problem. You could always volunteer, or go to community college and make good grades (it's cheap) and see if any of the people there would be a reference for you.
