Complaining about employers, past and present.

Would anyone else find it funny when you get unsolicited advice from friends about how you shouldn't complain about previous employers, and yet they complain about their current employer?

It must be okay to complain about current employers but not the past ones you've had.

I thought the advice was mainly relevant to interview situations.

Complaining about your present/past employers will put the interviews off (as they will think that you will be unhappy working for them as well, lowering moral).
