Amazingly my NT intern has discovered the comforting aspects of statistics.

Last week his grandmother was in the ICU, I calculated her odds of recovery (which were really good).

Since he was really bummed I showed him the math. He ran the numbers a few more times, huged me, and said the results (>80% survival based on NLM data) meant more than all the plaitudes people had thrown at him.

His grandma is going home later this week and I think I've got a new friend

Is this your job...are you some kind of medical professional that does this for a living?

I design critical care life support systems so I'm always reading the same literature as ICU doctors.
