I thought this was interesting and helpful. It focuses on women's clothing choices for a work interview.

Holy crap those look like expensive clothes and accessories...and I can't wear heels regardless of the reason otherwise I can't walk.

Yeah, my balance is terrible in anything other than the flattest shoes. I find that expensive styles can be imitated more affordably through shopping sales, thrift stores, yard sales.

Even though the video suggests tailoring, I think if you couldn't afford tailoring and didn't have the sewing skills to adjust things yourself, you could always use items that wouldn't need tailored such as a skirt, a blouse and a 3/4 sleeve or short sleeved cardigan as mentioned in the video.

Depends on the job you're going for. Show up at a manufacturing plant or a taxi company or something like that, for an interview, dressed like that, and I imagine you'd be laughed out of the building.

Lot of interview advice talks as if high-paid professionals and office workers are the only people who exist in the world.

My mother did all her job interviews in jeans and a t-shirt and got hired. I remember my friends saying that she should dress nicer and wear make-up but she never does that and doing so for the interview would have just been faking. What they saw at the interview was what they were going to be seeing every day she worked there.

You might want to for nicer jobs but for crummy minimum wage jobs I don't think it matters as much.

What jobs did your mom apply for?

There are jobs where that might be appropriate attire.

Wearing the right attire is appropriate; as is knowing what's right. Person I knew who worked for BNSF railroad said they they look twice (in a bad way) at a guy who shows up to a railroad job interview in a 3 piece suite.

It matters just as much, but the dress code is different. You will not get the job if you overdress.
