I work as a Library Page, Im going to school for my degree and every library and the libraries higher positions REQUIRE customer service skills. My current pay isnt enough to help with food and other things, so I sort of need the job. Unfortuneately the Page job doesnt count as customer service skills, -(even though customers prefer pages over every other position in the library-), and when I called the office about the Library Circ Clerk jobs that Im going for, they say that I HAVE to have those customer service skills, and that pages only get the job if they have had other customer service jobs.

I dont have that, I cant afford to lose my job, and I cant get a new customer service job WITHOUT some major drawbacks.-(the drawbacks far outweigh the positives-). The Office will ONLY accept my turned in applications and consider me for an interview if I have those customer service skills.

What should I do?

-*sigh-*I started off as a volunteer for 2 years,-(doesnt count as customer service-), then got a Library Page job, and then went to College to get my AAS degree.-(Im still going-!-) Unfortuenately the AAS Degrees Program is to help people get a position in the library, it doesnt accomodate for the fact that I already had a job in the library. With that being said, and even doing the work credits of a circ clerk, my instructor has told me that those wouldnt count as Customer Service Skills either, even though Im doing the Clerks job. My instructors have also said and proven that the Library positions here-(besides Page-) ALL have the same requirements....

I meet everyother requirement besides the customer service skills, and I know for a fact that the people who have been chosen over me HAVENOT gone to school/nor have they participated in anything library related.-(One of the MAJOR requirements is to have a Degree or at least some Library classes, and that is overlooked because they have the customer service skills-+family already working their-)

A bit of help/advice would be greatly appreciated-?-!
PS-:Sorry for the -"--" and other things, my keyboard has an issue when pressing the shift key. -----------(i pressed shift only-)

What about taking a Christmas season job in retail? Almost every retail job involves customer service.

They don't have a cataloging or technical services department at your library? Those jobs are behind-the-scenes and don't require customer service...
