I'll reply to this thread as it seems the most relevant of the three.

Computer Repair is probably the best option in my opinion (the one I'm considering myself as well). Working on a team, but alone, with your own space and fixing hardware, software, or removing viruses. Social interaction to a minimum with somewhat like-minded people, little customer interaction. Seems ideal, but has drawbacks such as pay not being spectacular or little upward movement unless you go into company IT and deal with less of a team and more on your own with one on one/group interaction and more responsibilities.

When I worked as a nurse I used to talk to these technicians who'd come in to fix the printers. Every so often I'd talk to them. They said they pretty much work alone. Their company (Samsung, HP, Ricoh, etc) gets phone calls for jobs and they just drive around and fix them. (Personally, I think they half-fix the printers because they're there attending to it every two months).

Since computer repair is a dead/dying/low-end job these days, the other suggestion of being a travelling printer repair guy or certified brand laptop warranty repair guy are good choices!

Heck... not a bad idea! I thought about it many years ago... never pursued it. I wish I had.

I like the idea of the Certified Brand Laptop warranty repair guy but how would I get into that line of work?

The people who repair the machines and computers at the radiation clinics for cancer treatment get paid very well and drive from clinic to clinic. One of them told me he makes about $3,000 per visit, and makes quite a few visits per month, sometimes more than one a day. It is very specialized though.

Research analyst. My sister does that, actually does a lot of work from home, has team meetings but then it's up to her to find the relevant material & that's a solo job.

Insurance actuarial...estimates the damage on cars & houses & whatever.

Somehow contact the folks at the big name brands like HP/Compaq, Dell, IBM/Lenovo... have at very least A+ tech certificate and some kind of experience in the field.

Another option I've thought of lately is long-haul truck driving. Of course, I'll need to upgrade my standard car lic. to Class 1, but maybe I can find a company willing to bring me up in return for some sort of employment equity deal.

There's also a course to become a railroad conductor...

Start your own online shop using E-Bay or Amazon or something.

- You can work from home
- You work for yourself
- The more work you put into it, the more you get out of it.

Just a thought

Shipping and receiving in the parts trade. I mostly work independently and mostly just deal with couriers. Part techs, and mechanics. They seem to either ignore my quirks or just don't notice. The only thing I need to do is ensure my job is done in a timely manner and my warehouse is organized. I do use the computer a lot and have the option of communication via email as well as doing automated courier calls online such as UPS and FedEx online. I schedule the pickups online electronically.

Do you find buying faulty pc's and laptops from ebay then stripping and selling as parts works out well?

That is a good one, indeed. Prior to choosing to go back to school and take upper-division undergraduate accounting classes, I worked for a subcontractor as a cost estimator. Part of my responsibilities involved CAD-related stuff like drawing door and frame submittals, etc. Was probably one of my more favorite parts of that job from what I recall because of the technical nature of things and my ability to visualize things. Could be creative.

I work with heavy duty truck parts ( semis). Things like hoods, bumpers, and engines.
