Hi:

I am seeking a part time job in a front desk type of a position next to getting my real estate license for my first job. I am trying to get a second one to keep bread on the table and I have had a few interviews. The interviews seem to go well but then I always get the same answer from most employers.

"It was nice speaking with you. I have a couple other interviews this week. I will get back with you next week."

Does it mean that they are telling me no in a polite manner? Also, is there a way to know when an employer is going to say yes?

It's not always a way to brush you off and say no, although sometimes it is. There is no way to know until you either call back or get a call from them. I've gotten a job a couple of times where they said that. They really did have some other interviews they wanted to do first but liked me. I've also not gotten a job several times when they said that and I have no way of knowing if they did have interviews or not.

What I would do if I were you is to wait about a week and call them back and ask if they have made a decision yet. I also sometimes tell then during the call that I really want the job but if I don't get it I need to look for other jobs, and I ask them to call me and let me know either way, if they want me or not. That's a good way to find out if they are just being nice and not going to hire you. If they aren't, they will usually tell you to go ahead and start looking around because there is somebody they are pretty sure they will hire.

For me, its the "leave it with me" which indicates unsuccessful interview

It means exactly what they said. If they don't call you back within the next week or two then you didn't get the job. If they do call you back, then you did. The only way to know if an employer will say yes is when they actually do. I had one interview that I thought went really badly but it landed me my current job.

You can't read too much into it. Few employers will hire someone on the spot when they have scheduled several people for an interview.

I had an interview last week and they told me all the details that go along with the position. Then when the interview was over she said "I have a couple of other interviews this week but I wanted to meet you and I think you have a nice speaking voice. I will call you next...Monday."

I said that if I did not hear from her then I would give her a call.

Do you think she was saying no to me?

Were I work, we are not allowed to hire people on the spot. We have to interview at least 3 people, and then submit to HR the one we want hired.

So it sounds like this is required by law then.

It depends on the place. I work for a state agency. A private place may not have the same rules.

Just about every public place that I have gone to does this

1. Tells me what I would be doing
2. Shows me the type of work
3. Tells me they have other interviews

The rules seem to vary quite a bit. When I interviewed at a federal agency, I was offered the job on the spot.

It's not professional to hire a person on the spot, or to give an indication that you're favoring someone. You could end up hiring your second choice because your first choice wants too much money or their references don't work out. It's good to call if you don't hear from someone, but I'd wait a day. If they say they'll let you know on Monday and they don't call, I'd call on Tuesday. It's also a good idea to ask, if they go with someone else, if they have any recommendations for you to be more successful in your next interview. Many people will just straight up tell you that the other person had more experience or "fit in" better. That can be really useful information.

If you do not get a job offer at the end of the interview you were unsuccessful.

False, especially if they are interviewing more than one candidate.

In my experience, it most likely means exactly what he said: he has other interviews.

I have interviewed and hired plenty of people during my work life. As a manager, "due diligence" required that I interview at least 3 people for a position. And even once all interviews were complete it would be only some days later that I would make a decision. Thereafter paperwork would have to go through HR before an offer could be made. That adds a few days. Plus changes in business conditions since the time the interview process started could impact the timing of any actual offer.

Of course, each enterprise will handle things in their own way. I am sure that some positions in some companies are filled by offers at time of interview, but I have never had personal experience of that happening. Rather, I have always found the hiring process to be annoyingly slow.
