Hi my names is Chad i am 18 years old with Aspergers and ADD, Depression and Anxiety. Im having a hard time finding employment. Im a college student studying automotive technology to become a certified Auto mechanic with a 4.0 GPA. I took High school auto shop too and was the teachers assistant it was a lot of fun working with other kids who have the same interest in cars. I fix my friends and familes cars when they need repairs or maintenence. Ive torn down and rebuilt car and motorcycle engines. Im a hard worker and im motivated and willing to learn new things. I just cant seem to get my foot in the door. Its very competitive but i dont know why its so hard to find a entry level job even a fast food restaurant down here in southern california. I have a good resume. I had a seasonal one month job at UPS as a driver helper delivering mail at christmas time but have been unemployed since then.

Any tips or advice for interviews or ways to find a good job is greatly appreciated.

If you're officially diagnosed with ASD, I believe there's something called "vocational rehabilitation," which could help you find employment. It seems as if they would have that, California being a big state and all.

Or...sometimes, you could just walk into a retail place or a fast food place and ask for an application. In some retail places like Macy's, you could fill out an online application in the store. Sometimes, at fast food places, you might even get an interview right there.

If there's a store that is just opening, I would definitely pop in there.

Costco's actually a good place to get employment. The starting salary is at least $11 per hour.

Or you could fill out an online application from your home. Or you could get on the California state job service website or whatever it's called, and upload your resume there.

Or you could walk into a garage and inquire whether they have "helper" positions. Tell them what you're doing in school. If that particular garage doesn't have one, maybe the person there could refer you to another garage.

Don't they have something at your school which could help you with employment as well?

^They actually don't at most schools. Sometimes they have a financial class, but that' about it.

You could log on to the UPS hiring website and see if they're hiring in your area. I don't know about the hub where you live, but the hub in Portland is hiring 77 new part time people. You just gotta be super strong.

Anyway, starting wage is $10 an hour and you get full medical benefits after a year.

You should go for UPS-- Especially If you have a drivers' license.

I've been dealing with something similar. I used to volunteer at a couple churches in my area and Mike (another volunteer at one of the churches I volunteered at) owns a handy man service. Recently, he's taken me along with him on a couple odd jobs for which he paid me $10 per hour.

Maybe if you try volunteering somewhere for a few months, you could demonstrate to someone that you're not just some lazy, apathetic, good-for-nothing teenager (as the stereotype goes). If nothing else, it looks good on resumes and college applications.

I came here as a last resort because ive done all the things mentioned here including applying on the UPS website, i loved working for such a professional company and would love to start a career with them. However ive already done all there applications possible within 40 miles of me with no reponse. I know i will have a one month job again doing the same seasonal job in december but am focusing on more long term goals. The fast food restaurants that i apply online and paper applications rarely if ever call me for an interview and when they do schedule an interview with me it usually goes well and at the end of the interview with the taco bell managers they say the have 10 other people to interview today and we will give you a call if we decide to hire you.

^ Well the way it worked for me is I had to sign up for UPS Jobs and schedule my own interview. What you do is go to this website, select the United States as your location, click "Search Jobs by Location," and it'll prompt you to put in a city and a state. I just checked the Los Angeles Hub using this method, and it looks like they have a lot of positions open in Anaheim.

Then you input all of your information and set an appointment for a tour of your selected hub.
