Hello, I am couch hopping and have been since my mother passed. My budget is more then some less then some.

How does one find a place to rent in the U.S.? I have asked many people in many ways. Common responses to this question that I have received are short laughs, grunts and/or quietly walking away. With one exception "Look it up" was told to me. The internet searches that I have tried manly return what not to do when moving.

Government assistance does not seem to be an option. As many of the responses I receive as mentioned above were from Government officials from 5 different offices.

Thanks for any advice.

http://www.rentals.com

If you live in the US, go to the website link above, and find a place to rent by typing in the white box in the center of the screen the city and state abreviation, or just the zip code, and then click search.

Google "craigslist" and then the state you're in. If you're looking for a room in a house, the SW Virginia area is about 300-350 a month. I don't know about other areas. A one bedroom apartment in this area is 400-800, depending on how nice an apartment you're looking for.

Craigslist apartment listings usually don't look for references and tend to be cheaper than traditional rentals.
