I feel like I've got a reasonable amount that I have earned from my work since I started but I don't have another job apart from this one and I still live a parent and her partner because of where I work and I still don't feel like moving into some flat or consider independent living because I feel having a carer checking in on you makes me feel like a child.

It seems like most people these days are just starting to get on their feet in their 30's. So I would say you're doing alright.

If you like living with your parents and they are okay with it, I see no reason you should move out.

Save your money dude, rent is expensive!

Got my first paid work at 28, tho that was short lived when I my body/mind just didn't want to do it and burned through savings so in mid 30s now still living with parents but fortunate enough to have relatively stable job in retail, but stuck with a stagnant wage, no real hope of getting above £21k meaning renting for independence / housesharing with random strangers takes a huge chunk out of my wages with no room for saving or splashing out on takeaways.

Typically you should have lots of money when you are in your retirement years not your 30's. However you need to start investing in the stock market if you have not already. Most Millionaires in America become millionaires in middle aged to senior years not young years.

I lived in a cheap apartment for ten years to save money.

Its very hard to find a cheap apartment these days. Best thing most young people can do is live with their parents.

I was lucky and showed up promptly when one became available. I got it because I showed up first!

wow thats dirt cheap. Nowadays you can only find those prices in the Developing World. Other than that you could rent for 500 dollars a month in Nebraska. Nowadays rent is about 2 grand a month. What year was that?

The mid80s to 90s. I think a normal rent was twice that.

I have 32k saved up right now. s**t has become overly complicated now that my mom passed and I have a house in my name while still having my apartment (at least until July because I plan on leaving after five years with this going on). All paid off- just have to take care of fixing things/painting and maybe get some new appliances.

Because it was a smoke heavy home for most rooms, painting got estimated at around 8.5k. A little scared to spend that kinda money but they are very reputable and I've seen the work they did before. I want it all done right because the smell would otherwise be a dealbreaker for me as a non smoker.

Kilz original paint can be used for blocking odors like that.

Think of it this way - if you can pay all your bills, feed yourself, and put a little to the side every month, you are doing VERY well. Lots of people have more debt than income.

Living with a parent/caregiver. Take that as an opportunity to save. There is no shame in living with a parent. Some would tell you to stay as long as you are welcome.

Live within your means too. Shiny things are very tempting - new car, new this, new that. Easy trap to fall into.

You're doing great friend.
